1st 2017 Birds in Flight Photography Shoots Woodbridge Island / Cape Town

Due to the strong and unpleasant South-Easter the last couple of weeks my own Birds in Flight photography took an unfortunate back seat. Since the start of the New Year I've managed two reasonable wind free mornings with a few Cape Town Birds in Flight photographers.

We had a very special display of a few fast and vocal Africa Black Oystercatchers birds roaming around all morning - up and down the Diep River adjacent the Milnerton Golf Course / Table Bay Nature Reserve. More of them here: African Black Oystercatcher Landing

    Images with Canon EOS 7D Mark II / Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens. Manual Mode: f6.3 / ISO 640 - 3200 / 1/5000s / 10 fps / Handheld.

Objective: 1st 2017 shooting with my regular Woodbridge Island / Cape Town Birds in Flight photographer friends. Preparation for the February 2017 Birds in Flight Photography Workshop Cape Town

Swift Tern After-Dive Shake-Off - Woodbridge Island, Cape Town

A swift tern shaking off some excess water after an unsuccessful food dive in the Milnerton Lagoon, Woodbridge Island. Its very challenging to capture this routine, but the Canon EOS 7D Mark II's responsive Autofocus system and fast frame capture rate nails focus. The images here are three consecutive frame captures.

All swift tern photos by Vernon Chalmers with Canon EOS 7D Mark II / EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens ISO 640 f/5.6 1/4000's, AI Servo (Handheld). 10 fps High-Speed continuous shooting mode.

Image with Canon EOS 6D / EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens
I've facilitated two private training sessions with a client keen to master her relatively new Canon EOS 70D and for getting a better understanding of the Exposure Triangle in terms of the Creative Shooting Zone available in all Canon EOS DSLR's (Program / Aperture Priority / Shutter Priority / Manual Modes).

One of the client's major objectives is the mastering of her Canon EOS 70D's exposure settings (for people / landscapes / low light photography) before embarking on a dream holiday to New Zealand later this month. She recently purchased the Canon EOS 70D (as a 1st DSLR) with various Canon EF / EF-S lenses and was not entirely sure which of her lenses to use on her site-seeing trip.

    Current Canon Gear

    • Canon EOS 70D Body
    • Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens
    • Canon EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens
    • Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

    Agenda / Learning Areas

    • Current camera gear / challenges
    • Exposure Triangle (fundamentals)
    • Canon EOS Menu Orientation
    • Exposure Settings / Shooting Modes

    • Autofocus vs. Manual Focus Settings
    • Drive Modes (One Shot vs AI Servo)
    • Low Light Photography
    • Canon Flash modes (E-TTL vs Manual)

Setup Decisions (specific to holiday photography project)

The African Spoonbill is not common around Woodbridge Island and I'm always delighted to see and photograph them. I've watch a few of them for a few hours before they eventually flew off to sleep somewhere else.

2016 Highlights as Cape Town Photographer / Workshop Facilitator

V&A Waterfront New Years Fireworks - Vernon Chalmers Canon EOS 6D
    Canon EOS 6D / 70-300mm Lens
During 2016 I spent more time with different photographic genres (compared to 2015) and also assisted many new and experienced photographers in their skills development via my Photography Workshops Cape Town / Private Canon EOS training. Some of the my personal highlights of the past year:
    • General Photography
    • Birds in Flight Photography
    • Macro & Close-Up Photography
    • Landscape & Long Exposure Photography
    • Fashion / Speedlite Flash Photography
    • Motor Racing / Action Photography

Framing 2016: Highlights as Photographer / Workshop Facilitator
For reflecting on 2016  I've identified various photo shoots / events that generated meaning and added value to me as photographer, rather than just identifying my best photographs from the past year. These photographic events had a profound impact on my own development as photographer / photography workshop facilitator. Not necessarily for image creation, but also for greater understanding of the skills development process of the new and / or more experienced photographer.

Canon EOS Camera / EF Lens pairings used
    • Canon EOS 6D / EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens
    • Canon EOS 6D / EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens
    • Canon EOS 7D Mark II / EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens
    • Canon EOS 70D / EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens

General Photography - Vernon Chalmers Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Canon EOS 7D Mark II / 400mm Super Telephoto Lens
    General Photography Cape Town
Although any V&A Waterfront New Years Fireworks photographs should be considered as long exposure photography its included here as a general photography capture.

The perched Pied Kingfisher was captured in the Table Bay Nature Reserve while walking with many of Birds in Flight workshop delegates - the reserve is opposite the Milnerton Golf Course, very close to Woodbridge Island.

The Pied Kingfisher image is currently used for the promotion of our Cape Town Photography Workshops Jan - March 2017.

Birds in Flight Photography Cape Town
This is without any doubt one of my most enjoyable genres of photography. Once the challenging skills of capturing birds in flight are mastered capturing becomes easier and the attention is focused on the species, behaviour and compositional opportunities.

Apart from the Birds in Flight workshops facilitated during 2016 I've presented various talks at Cape Town photographic clubs.

Woodbridge Island offers more than 30+ bird species and most of them are documented on my Woodbridge Island Photography website.

Close-Up & Macro Photography - Vernon Chalmers Canon EOS 70D
    Canon EOS 70D / 100mm Macro Lens
Macro & Close-Up Photography Cape Town
I find (smaller) static subjects far more challenging than Birds in Flight - with manual focus, being steady on a tripod, using a different camera body / lens, very shallow depth of field different and different compositional guidelines.

High magnification photography is challenging at times, but I am always fascinated by the close-up detail.

I don't always rush to my 100mm macro lens first - close-up photography with other lenses (i.e. 70-300mm with close-up lens accessories) are sometimes easier and the results are as pleasing.

Landscape & Long Exposure Photography - Vernon Chalmers Canon EOS 6D
    Canon EOS 6D / 16-35mm Ultra-Wide Lens
Landscape & Long Exposure Photography Cape Town
The magic of long exposure photography are very special and I should spend more time with these special moments before sunrise and after sunset.

Here I've included two recent photographs showing Milnerton beach after sunset and then the main bridge at Woodbridge Island (over the Milnerton Lagoon).

I find the best light just before and / or just after the so-called golden hours of photography. The early mornings / late evenings are sometimes challenging, but always worth the effort.

Landscape & Long Exposure Photography - Vernon Chalmers Canon EOS 6D
    Canon EOS 6D / 16-35mm Ulltra-Wde Lens
Woodbridge Island is outdoor studio to my own photography and the majority of my photography workshop shoots and practicals are done on and around the island's bridges, Table Bay and at times Milnerton beach (towards Table Mountain and north towards Table View / Blaauwberg Strand).

More Milnerton beach / low light sunset photography

    More Table Mountain photography

More Woodbridge bridges / Table Mountain / Cape Town low light sunrise photography

Fashion / Canon Speedlite Flash Photography - Vernon Chalmers Canon EOS 6D
    Canon EOS 6D / 70-300mm Lens / Speedlite Flash
Fashion / Speedlite Flash Photography Cape Town
I'm honored to be the Partners Hair Design photographer for their end of the year Graduation / Fashions shows for the Partners Hair Design Training Academy (2014 - 2016).

Fashion / event photography creates different challenges and I use these opportunities to work with my various Speedlite flashes.

Over the last couple of years I have placed huge trust in my 85mm lens, but during the 2016 Partners Hair Design Graduation / Fashion Show Cape Town I tested my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens low light capabilities (with Canon Speedlite flash).

Motor Racing Killarney Cape Town - Vernon Chalmers Canon EOS 6D
    Canon EOS 6D / 70-300mm Zoom Lens
Motor Racing / Action Photography Cape Town
I spent a noisy, but exhilarating Saturday morning with Joseph Inns and the Tygerberg Photographic Society honing our panning skills.

I've been to the Killarney race track (Western Province Motor Club) for a couple of years now, but this was the first year I used the Canon EOS 6D / EF 70-300mm combination.

The different speeds of the cars and motorcycles allows for some fine-tuning of different (slower) shutter speeds.
