Canon Full-Frame Wide-Angle Lens Experimentation on Crop Body
Today was the first time I tried out the Canon EOS 70D and EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Ultra-Wide Angle (Full Frame) lens. Usually the lens is paired with my Canon EOS 6D, but at the time of the walkabout the EOS 6D was paired with the Canon EF 24-70mm f/4 L IS USM lens. The field of view of the 16-35mm on the crop body EOS 70D is more / less the same as the 24-70mm on the Full Frame 6D.

Preparation for the Birds in Flight Photography Workshop
I frequently get questions on what the 'best' focal lens length is for shooting Birds in Flight at Woodbridge Island, Cape Town (where we will facilitate the Birds in Flight Photography Workshop practicals).

My response: it will depend if you're shooting with a Full Frame or an APS-C (Crop) DSLR body. For most bodies the focal length of 300 - 600mm generally works best. (The detail and differences are generally / more specifically discussed and demonstrated during my Birds in Flight Photography private training / workshops.

Also read: Canon EOS 70D for Birds in flight Photography (with images)

There is also the question of prime vs zoom lenses? I generally prefer a 400mm prime lens (non-zoom) lens on a crop body for Birds in Flight. My current DSLR body choice is the Canon EOS 7D Mark II with its fast and very effective Autofocus system. (Prime vs zoom lens options will also be discussed during the workshop).

Many photographers attending or are interested in the Birds in Flight workshops also ask the question: Is it possible to shoot Birds in Flight with a 70-300mm zoom lens?

To answer this question I went out with a Canon EOS 70D (crop body) and a EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens and captured a few Birds in Flight at Woodbridge Island under the same conditions / settings as I would when shooting with Canon EOS 7D Mark II / Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM prime lens.

Herewith a selection of 7 images captured during one shoot.

All with Canon EOS 70D / Canon EF 70-300mm lens f/4.5.6L IS USM Lens at 300mm

For photographers interested in attending the Birds in Flight Workshop at Intaka Island / Woodbridge Island, Cape Town with 'only' a 70-300mm lens - I'm confident that you will be more than OK with your 70-300mm zoom lens (considering reasonable light / technique and some patience).

Using Auto ISO for High Speed Action

Auto ISO Study for Birds in Flight Photography
I'm currently researching the application of Auto ISO in Birds in Flight photography and would like to share a few images captured with the Canon EOS 70D / EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens - demonstrating the modern DSLR's ability for making ISO changes (when Auto-ISO is enabled).

Note: My own field study is based on the relationship between BIF photography (high shutter speed action shooting / continuous AF tracking) and the modern DSLR's Auto-ISO function and will not (necessarily) apply for static subjects (i.e. perched birds) - although, I use the same settings when shooting perched birds (when out doing Birds in Flight photography in good light).

The Canon EOS 70D (APS-C / crop body) is not really recognized as a Canon-recommended high-end body (in the same way as the EOS 7D Mark II (2014) and higher were at the time of Canon's 2013 Auto-ISO publication) for shooting Auto-ISO in Manual and the Semi-Auto Modes (Av = Aperture Priority / Tv = Shutter Priority Modes).

Nevertheless, I went out with the EOS 70D on Auto-ISO for testing / demonstrating the typical enthusiast camera's ability for auto-adjusting ISO's in a low-light and fast-changing background shooting environment.

Each of the 4 consecutive frames exposed at different ISO's as the small / erratic bird moved quickly against a lighter to a darker background:

Finding
A significant finding is the rapid change in ISO 1000 to 2500 (between the 4 continuous frames) as the camera is attempting an ideal exposure.

Canon EF Lens Full Time Manual Focus Override

Canon EF Lens Full Time Manual Focus Override
Canon EOS 6D / EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens
I often use the lens full time manual focus override function on my Canon USM zoom lens when doing close-up photography with the Canon EOS 6D / Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens (without a tripod).

Canon Full Time Manual Focus Override
Full time manual focus override is a lens focusing function for fine-tuning focus while in camera / lens Autofocus mode. Its not always possible in the field (without a tripod) to go manual focus when doing close-up photography - for this purpose I gently turn / fine-tune the lens focus ring for pin-point focusing (whilst in AF Mode).
