Update Links: Restoration of the wooden bridge, Woodbridge Island

Restoration of the wooden bridge, Woodbridge Island - Image Copyright Vernon Chalmers
Wooden Bridge Woodbridge Island  :  Image Vernon Chalmers
I have been tracking the possible restoration process of the historic wooden bridge, Woodbridge Island Cape Town since December 2016 (with my own before images and local media coverage).

Latest Update: Restoration of the Wooden Bridge (Aug 2019)

The local media regularly covers the restoration, the costs and the project starting date, but the current high water levels in the Diep river / under the wooden bridge may have impeded the eventual start of the project somewhat.

I have noticed various construction containers offloaded and stationed close to the Milnerton Canoe Club on Woodbridge island this morning. Hopefully this is the start of the eagerly awaited restoration process.

History of Milnerton / Woodbridge Island

Birds in Flight variety on a crisp Saturday Morning

Yellow-billed duck in in flight Woodbridge Island, Milnerton
For large parts of this year the conditions were not great for photographing birds in flight here at the Diep River, Woodbridge Island.

A lack of good light (winter conditions) and the long-term restoration project of the wooden bridge damped my enthusiasm somewhat.

Nevertheless, I will grab a good light day and Saturday was such a day.

Herewith a few birds in flight during a vibrant and sunny morning - even managed to photograph my first juvenile lesser flamingos (not often seen in this part of the world.

Some low flying over the Diep river, with others flying higher and over the Milnerton Golf Course.

Birds in flight (from the top)
  • Yellow-billed duck
  • African oystercatcher
  • Cape shoveler duck

Update: Restoration of new Wooden Bridge, Woodbridge Island - August 2019

Update: Restoration of new Wooden Bridge, Woodbridge Island August 2019
I took a walk this morning to take a look at the progress of the new wooden bridge at Woodbridge Island, Milnerton

Four images captured on 24 August 2019.

I've been tracking the Wooden Bridge Restoration Project since 2015 - more here and now in 2019 its all happening, they have almost reach the Otto Du Plessis Drive end after starting from the Milnerton Canoe Club / Golf Course end.

According to the City of Cape Town's website, the project should be completed during the second half of 2019:

Woodbridge Island, Wooden Bridge Restoration Project
The restoration of one of Cape Town’s oldest network links is currently underway in Milnerton. Work is currently underway on the 120-year historic wooden bridge which has been closed for several years now. As a provincial heritage site, and the only bridge of its kind left in the country, the City of Cape Town has undertaken its restoration which will be completed in the second half of 2019. Long Exposure Photography - Woodbridge Island

Long Exposure Photography - Woodbridge Island, Cape Town
Capturing long exposures / low light photography Cape Town

Early Saturday morning I went out for an overdue long exposure shoot at Woodbridge Island, Cape Town. I used my Canon EOS 6D full frame body paired with the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 IS USM lens
.

Objective of the long exposure shoot
Shooting similar scenes with the fast increase of natural light (without using any ND filter) - just taking advantage of longer shutter speeds at a small aperture.
