Small Birds in Flight - Table Bay Nature Reserve, Woodbridge Island

Small Birds in Flight - Table Bay Nature Reserve, Woodbridge Island Cape Town
Small birds in flight in the Table Bay Nature Reserve close to Woodbridge Island / Milnerton Cape Town. A morning that started with lots of blue sky and perfect conditions for birds in flight changed very quickly to an overcast and rather cool morning. Some of the birds was at quite a distance and to compensate for the low light (for autofocus) I used Single Point AF for better in-flight results.

All images by Vernon Chalmers with Canon EOS 7D Mark II and Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens - handheld in overcast / poor lighting conditions.

Landing Routine of an Oystercatcher - Woodbridge Island, Cape Town

A fast and vocal African Black Oystercatcher bird coming in for landing. During a windless morning of shooting we encountered many of these two-tone birds - I've never seen so many Oystercatchers up and down the Diep River, Woodbridge Island.

All images captured by Vernon Chalmers with Canon EOS 7D Mark II / Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens (Handheld). Close to Woodbridge Island / Table Bay Nature Reserve.

Elusive Malachite Kingfisher at Woodbridge Island, Cape Town

Record shots of Woodbridge Island's only / elusive Malachite Kingfisher
Very happy to know we have at least one Malachite Kingfisher at Woodbridge Island. Very far out perched on the side of the old wooden bridge and lately in the Woodbridge Island / Milnerton Lagoon section of the Table Bay Nature Reserve

Added a second image of the Malachite Kingfisher after spotting him during my latest Birds in Flight Photography Workshop practical at Woodbridge Island.

Update: Elusive Malachite Kingfisher in Flight (Table Bay Nature Reserve)

Canon EOS Camera Book Recommendations Cape Town

I currently use the Canon EOS 6D, Canon EOS 7D Mark II and the Canon EOS 70D DSLR's as my go-to photography bodies (paired with a variety of  Canon EF consumer and professional lenses).

Snapshots to Great Shots Book Series
Before acquiring any of the Canon EOS bodies I did extensive research in terms of the detailed specifications, functions and other body-specific criteria. Soon after getting each body I also acquired the relevant 'From Snapshots to Great Shots' series book to learn more - and as future reference guide (together with the Canon user guides).

I have found these books of great assistance and made detailed recommendations on my Canon Camera News website. Each Canon EOS book below will have a link to the more detailed recommendation.

On all the original book recommendation pages are useful links to a variety of other online camera / photographic resources (specific to each of the three Canon EOS bodies).

Availability (Hard Copy / Kindle / PDF)
The From Snapshots to Great Shots series should be available from Orms (Cape Town / Bellville), most local Cape Town book retailers and / or online retailers such as AmazonPeachpit and Takealot.
