As a
birds in flight photographer I;m always on the lookout for something different, something unique to add into an ever growing gallery of in-flight images. The "Crashing Pied Kingfisher" was one of those unique opportunities that I get from time to time down here at Woodbridge Island.
This series of 5 images that I captures of a low flying pied kingfisher was not that different from their normal low flying style, or so I thought at the time of the captures. It was only when back in the studio that I saw that the pied kingfisher was flying really low and ended up crashing in the water. I only saw the detail in Lightroom and was really amazed seeing the crashing towards the end of the sequence.
Credit goes to the professional responsiveness and Autofocus tracking of the
Canon EOS 7D Mark II paired with my trusted
EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens shooting at 10 frames per second. Generally I do not use images this far out from me, but the uniqueness of this unlikely event made me keep the images.
The images was originally published on my Woodbridge Island Photography website in 2016 and with the migration to the Vernon Chalmers Photography website somehow never added them back online.
Rugby world Cup final 2019 Japan: England vs South Africa
It was only after South Africa won the Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan against England that I decided it was time to bring this 'Crashing Pied Kingfisher' series back and I published the images on my
Vernon Chalmers Photography Facebook Page and the
BirdLife South Africa Facebook Group under the heading of ''This is unlikely to happen...' Eddie Jones thought so as well earlier this morning.
Eddie Jones is the current England ruby team head coach who lost 12-32 against South Africa's Sprinkboks on 2 November 2019 at the International Stadium Yokohama in Yokohama, Japan.
