The Canon PowerShot Renaissance: Why Compact Cameras Matter Again

Yet the compact camera has not disappeared.
Instead, something more interesting is taking place. Older compact cameras are being rediscovered, established models remain remarkably desirable, and manufacturers are once again investing in new compact-camera designs. Within this development, Canon's PowerShot series provides an especially revealing case study.
Canon's compact-camera history extends back to the PowerShot 600, introduced in July 1996 as the company's first digital camera marketed to general consumers. The camera employed a 570,000-pixel CCD sensor and could record uncompressed images in a CCD RAW mode—an indication that even the earliest PowerShot concept was about more than simple automatic snapshots (Canon Inc., 1996). Thirty years later, Canon is explicitly describing compact digital cameras as being "back in the spotlight." Its 2026 Integrated Report states that younger users, particularly social-media users, increasingly want photographic and video capabilities that go beyond those provided by smartphones. Canon also identifies compact-camera ownership as having acquired a cultural and fashion dimension among younger photographers. (Canon Global)
The important question, therefore, is not simply whether compact cameras are returning.
The more significant question is why.
The answer appears to involve a combination of portability, optical capability, physical photographic operation, individuality, nostalgia, social-media culture, and a renewed appreciation of the dedicated camera as a distinct photographic instrument.
The PowerShot story illustrates this transition particularly well.
From Digital Revolution to Smartphone Displacement
When the PowerShot 600 appeared in 1996, digital photography was still an emerging technology. Digital cameras were not competing against smartphones because smartphones did not yet exist in their modern form. They were competing against film.
Canon's compact digital cameras helped establish a new photographic culture in which photography became immediate, reviewable and increasingly accessible. By 2008, Canon announced that it had shipped its 100-millionth compact digital camera. The company attributed much of the success of its compact cameras to portability, ease of use and consumer accessibility (Canon Inc., 2008). (Canon Global)
The subsequent development of the PowerShot family reflected the rapidly expanding expectations of digital photographers.
The PowerShot G series became particularly important because it challenged the assumption that a compact camera had to be technologically simplistic. The PowerShot G3, introduced in 2002, already offered manual exposure, aperture priority, shutter priority, RAW recording, an electronic control dial and programmable Custom modes. Its 4-megapixel CCD sensor and 35–140mm-equivalent f/2.0–3.0 lens were modest by contemporary standards, but its architecture clearly addressed photographers who wanted control within a relatively small camera (Canon Inc., 2002). By 2006, the PowerShot G7 had introduced a 10-megapixel CCD, DIGIC III processing, optical image stabilization and a 35–210mm-equivalent six-times optical zoom. Its physical design even drew upon the visual language of traditional film cameras (Canon Inc., 2006). (Canon Global)
The compact camera was therefore never merely a cheap substitute for a DSLR.
At its best, it represented another form of photographic architecture.
The Compact Camera Becomes Technically Serious
During the 2000s and early 2010s, the PowerShot concept diversified. Canon produced small everyday compacts, enthusiast-oriented G-series cameras and high-zoom SX models.
This diversification was important because it established a principle that remains relevant today: compact does not describe a single photographic purpose.
A small camera can be designed for portability.
Another can prioritise image quality.
Another can prioritise optical reach.
Another can provide advanced manual control.
Another can be designed around video.
The PowerShot range subsequently became a family of different solutions rather than a single category.
The G15, for example, combined a 28–140mm-equivalent five-times optical zoom with a bright f/1.8–2.8 aperture and close-focusing capability. Canon also improved autofocus performance substantially over its predecessor (Canon Inc., 2012). (Canon Global)
The development of larger sensors within compact bodies was another major step. The original PowerShot G7 X, introduced in 2014, combined a 1-inch CMOS sensor with a 24–100mm-equivalent f/1.8–2.8 lens in a body weighing approximately 304 grams. It was a significant demonstration that relatively high image quality and compact physical dimensions did not have to be mutually exclusive (Canon Inc., 2014). (Canon Global)
The G7 X concept subsequently evolved toward both still photography and video. The G7 X Mark III, introduced in 2019, employed a 1-inch stacked CMOS sensor, DIGIC 8 processing, 4K video and high-speed continuous shooting of up to approximately 30 frames per second under specified conditions. Its 24–100mm-equivalent f/1.8–2.8 lens provided a particularly useful combination of portability, low-light capability and optical versatility (Canon Inc., 2019). (Canon Global)
It is precisely this type of camera that is now demonstrating that technological age does not necessarily determine photographic relevance.
The Extraordinary Persistence of Older PowerShots
One of the most revealing aspects of the current compact-camera revival is the popularity of cameras that are not new.
The PowerShot G7 X Mark III was introduced in 2019. Yet in 2026 it remains highly sought after. Recent Japanese retail data reported by Digital Camera World placed the G7 X Mark III at the top of a compact-camera sales ranking, despite the model being nearly seven years old. The PowerShot SX740 HS also ranked extremely highly. Demand has been sufficiently strong that availability and second-hand pricing have become significant issues (Digital Camera World, 2026). This is an important development because it challenges the conventional consumer-electronics assumption that newer automatically means better.
In many areas of technology, an older product is displaced because its fundamental capabilities have become inadequate. But photography is different.
A camera's usefulness depends partly upon the relationship between its technical characteristics and the photographer's intended application.
A seven-year-old compact camera may still have the exact combination of sensor size, lens, body dimensions, controls, image quality and operational simplicity that a photographer wants.
The SX740 HS demonstrates this particularly well. Introduced with a 20.3-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, it provides a 40x optical zoom covering an extraordinary 24–960mm equivalent range, while weighing approximately 299 grams with battery and memory card (Canon Inc., 2018). (Canon U.S.A.)
From the perspective of a photographer who needs extreme optical versatility in a genuinely small package, its age is almost irrelevant.
Its specification remains its specification.
The camera does not become less useful merely because Canon subsequently introduced newer technologies elsewhere in its product range.
Why Smartphones Did Not Completely Replace the Compact Camera
The smartphone undoubtedly transformed photography.
It placed a capable camera in almost everyone's pocket, combined photography with communication, and introduced computational imaging into everyday picture-making. For many casual users, the need for a separate compact camera consequently disappeared.
But smartphones also changed the meaning of a dedicated camera.
Once almost everyone already had a camera, buying another camera required a reason.
That reason could no longer simply be "because it takes pictures."
The dedicated camera had to offer something distinctive.
Canon's current strategy recognises this directly. In its 2025 Imaging Group strategy presentation, Canon identifies several compact-camera categories, including photo-centric hybrid cameras, video-centric cameras, high-zoom and slim compact models. The company describes these categories in terms of values that smartphones cannot necessarily provide, including different forms of photographic expression, the enjoyment of capturing images, self-expression, and what Canon calls "reality & imperfection" (Canon Inc., 2026). This is perhaps the most important conceptual change.
The compact camera is no longer required to defeat the smartphone at being a general-purpose imaging device.
It needs to provide a different experience.
Reality, Imperfection and Photographic Character
There is a growing appreciation of photographs that do not necessarily look as though they have emerged from the latest computational imaging pipeline.
Older digital cameras can produce images with particular rendering characteristics. Their JPEG processing, noise characteristics, contrast, colour response, autofocus behaviour and lens performance may differ considerably from modern cameras and smartphones.
These differences can become part of the image's character.
This is not an argument that older cameras are technically superior. They generally are not.
It is an argument that technical imperfection can become aesthetically meaningful.
Photography has always contained such relationships. Film photographers have long selected particular emulsions because of their grain, colour response or tonal characteristics. Lens users select optics not only for resolution but for rendering. The same principle can now apply to digital cameras.
An older PowerShot can therefore become interesting precisely because it is not identical to a current smartphone or mirrorless camera.
The camera becomes part of the visual vocabulary.
The PowerShot G3 X: An Older Camera with Contemporary Relevance
The Canon PowerShot G3 X provides an especially useful example of this phenomenon.
Introduced in 2015, the G3 X combined a 1-inch, approximately 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor with a 25x optical zoom covering an extraordinary 24–600mm equivalent range. Its maximum aperture was f/2.8 at the wide end and f/5.6 at the telephoto end. Canon designed the camera specifically to combine broad focal-length coverage with relatively compact dimensions (Canon Inc., 2015). (Canon Global)
On paper, the G3 X is now an old camera.
In practical photographic terms, however, it remains remarkably interesting.
Its 24–600mm equivalent range covers everything from wide environmental compositions to substantial telephoto magnification without changing lenses. Its 1-inch sensor remains capable of RAW capture, while the integrated lens removes the need to carry an interchangeable-lens system.
This creates a very different relationship with photography.
The photographer is not managing a camera body, lens selection, lens changes and an expanding equipment system.
The photographer is managing seeing.
That distinction has become increasingly significant in my own recent use of the G3 X.
When the Camera Changes the Photographer's Pace
One of the most interesting characteristics of using an older compact camera such as the G3 X is that it can change the rhythm of photographic decision-making.
Working with an EOS or EOS R camera can become highly responsive. Autofocus systems are sophisticated, lenses are interchangeable and controls can be configured extensively. This is particularly valuable for demanding applications such as Birds in Flight photography.
The G3 X produces a different experience.
Its integrated 24–600mm-equivalent lens encourages a more deliberate approach. Rather than immediately reaching for another lens or changing physical equipment, the photographer works within one optical system.
That can slow the photographer down.
Paradoxically, this can be productive.
Slowing down allows greater attention to composition, distance, perspective, background relationships and subject behaviour. The camera becomes less about maximising technical response and more about negotiating the scene.
This is particularly apparent in environmental and botanical photography.
A small flower can be approached through a long focal length rather than simply through physical proximity. Background elements can be compressed. A subject can be isolated against a distant garden environment. The photographer can move between environmental context and intimate detail without changing equipment.
The result is not necessarily a technically superior image.
It can, however, be a different photograph.
And that distinction is central to understanding the renewed relevance of compact cameras.
The Superzoom as a Photographic System
The SX series offers another dimension.
The PowerShot SX740 HS provides a 24–960mm equivalent optical range in a camera weighing roughly 299 grams. That is an extraordinary amount of optical reach for such a small device. (Canon U.S.A.)
The significance of such a specification is not merely numerical.
A 960mm-equivalent field of view creates photographic possibilities that a smartphone cannot reproduce simply by adding more computational zoom. Optical focal length changes the relationship between photographer, subject and background.
This makes superzoom compacts particularly interesting for travel, wildlife observation, maritime photography, architecture, distant details and environmental documentation.
The compact camera can therefore occupy a very specific role:
It can be small enough to carry casually while providing optical possibilities that exceed those of the device most people carry every day.
This is one reason older superzoom PowerShots remain relevant.
Their usefulness is application-dependent rather than age-dependent.
From Still Photography to Content Creation
The contemporary compact-camera revival is not confined to still photography.
Canon's PowerShot V series demonstrates how the company is adapting the compact concept to contemporary visual culture. The PowerShot V1, introduced in April 2025, uses a 1.4-inch CMOS sensor—the first such sensor in a Canon compact camera—and combines it with DIGIC X processing. Its approximately 16–50mm-equivalent lens and design are oriented toward video, vlogging, casual still photography and content creation (Canon Inc., 2025). (Canon Global)

This represents an important evolution.
The compact camera is no longer simply the small still camera that preceded the smartphone.
It is becoming a dedicated visual-production device.
The contemporary PowerShot therefore occupies a very different cultural position from the PowerShot 600 of 1996. Yet the fundamental principle remains surprisingly consistent: provide a self-contained imaging instrument that can be carried easily and used immediately.
The Compact Camera as a Deliberate Choice
Perhaps the most significant change is that compact-camera ownership is becoming deliberate again.
During the height of the compact-camera market, many consumers purchased these cameras because they were the normal alternative to film.
Today, someone who buys a PowerShot is often making a conscious choice to carry a camera despite already owning a smartphone.
That changes the meaning of the object.
The compact camera becomes less of an automatic consumer purchase and more of a photographic instrument.
Canon's 2026 corporate reporting acknowledges this change explicitly, identifying new users—particularly younger people—as an important component of renewed compact-camera demand. Canon also states that it expanded compact-camera production in 2025 and intends to continue expanding the lineup. (Canon Global)
The company is therefore not treating the phenomenon simply as a nostalgic return to the past.
It is treating it as a developing market.
Why Older Cameras Can Remain Relevant
The current PowerShot revival also provides a useful lesson in how photographic equipment should be evaluated.
Camera technology is often discussed through a progression of specifications: more megapixels, faster autofocus, greater dynamic range, higher frame rates, better processors and improved video.
These developments are important.
But photography does not occur inside a specification sheet.
A camera becomes valuable when its capabilities correspond with a photographer's intentions.
An older camera may therefore remain relevant because it offers a combination that a newer camera does not reproduce in exactly the same form.
The G3 X's 24–600mm range is one example.
The SX740's 24–960mm range is another.
The G7 X Mark III's compact 1-inch format and bright 24–100mm-equivalent f/1.8–2.8 lens represent another. (Canon U.S.A.)
These are not necessarily obsolete cameras.
They are specific photographic solutions.
The Future of PowerShot
Canon's current direction suggests that the future of PowerShot is unlikely to be a simple return to the compact-camera market of the early 2000s.
The company now sees several distinct compact-camera opportunities: still photography, hybrid photography, video, social-media production, high-zoom photography and slim everyday cameras. Canon's market analysis also anticipates modest growth in the compact digital camera market over the coming years, driven partly by users seeking experiences and capabilities different from those offered by smartphones. This suggests a fragmented but potentially healthy future.
There may not be one "compact camera market."
There may instead be a collection of compact-camera cultures.
Some users will want a pocketable premium camera.
Others will want a superzoom.
Some will want a vlogging camera.
Some will want a small hybrid.
Others will deliberately seek older cameras because they enjoy their rendering and limitations.
And some photographers will use several of these categories alongside an EOS system.
This last point is particularly important.
The compact camera does not have to replace the interchangeable-lens camera.
It can complement it.
Conclusion: The Return Is Not Really a Return
The current PowerShot renaissance should therefore not be interpreted simply as a return to the past.
The compact camera is returning to a different photographic environment.
The smartphone has changed what people expect from cameras. Mirrorless systems have raised the technical ceiling for professional and enthusiast photography. Social media has accelerated the production and distribution of images. Younger users have grown up in a world in which photography is continuous and immediate.
Within that environment, the dedicated compact camera offers something different.
It provides optical capability.
It provides physical controls.
It provides a separate photographic experience.
It can provide RAW capture and deliberate photographic decision-making.
It can be small enough to accompany the photographer without becoming an equipment burden.
And, particularly in older models, it can provide a form of digital photographic character that is increasingly valued precisely because it is not perfectly modern.
Canon's PowerShot history demonstrates that the compact camera has never been a single thing. From the PowerShot 600 of 1996, through the enthusiast G series, the high-zoom SX cameras, the 1-inch G7 X and G3 X generations, and now the video-oriented PowerShot V1, Canon has repeatedly adapted the compact-camera concept to changing photographic circumstances. The renewed interest in older PowerShots therefore makes sense.
They do not need to compete with the newest EOS R camera.
They do not need to replace the smartphone.
They simply need to remain useful for what they were designed to do.
That may ultimately be the most important lesson of the compact-camera renaissance.
A camera does not become obsolete merely because a newer camera exists. It becomes obsolete when its particular photographic value disappears.
The current resurgence of PowerShot suggests that this value has not disappeared.
In some respects, photographers are only now rediscovering it.
