Travel photography presents a deceptively difficult lens-selection problem. The photographer wants wide-angle coverage for landscapes and architecture, sufficient reach for people and details, useful performance in changing light, and ideally a kit that can be carried all day without becoming a burden.For Canon EOS R-system photographers, the good news is that a remarkably capable travel kit does not require a collection of expensive L-series lenses. Canon's RF and RF-S ranges contain several relatively affordable STM zooms and primes that are small, light and optically capable.
My selection is deliberately divided into two groups: three lenses for full-frame EOS R cameras and three for APS-C EOS R cameras.
The philosophy is different for each format.
For full-frame, I would build the system around optical versatility and a fast prime. For APS-C, I would exploit the 1.6× crop factor to create a particularly efficient system with enormous effective reach.
The six lenses are:
Full-frame EOS R
APS-C EOS R
RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
RF-S 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM
RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM
This is not intended to be a ranking from first to sixth. Rather, these are six lenses that make sense as components of two different travel-photography systems.
Full-frame EOS R: the three-lens travel kit
1. Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
The first full-frame lens should be the RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM.
Travel photography inevitably produces situations in which 24mm or 28mm simply is not wide enough. Historic streets, interiors, architecture, dramatic landscapes and large foregrounds all benefit from an ultra-wide perspective.
The 15-30mm range is therefore highly complementary to a standard zoom.
Canon specifies a 15-30mm focal-length range, a minimum AF focusing distance of 0.28m at 15mm, and a considerably closer 0.128m minimum distance in manual focus at 15mm. The lens weighs approximately 390g. It also incorporates optical Image Stabilization and STM autofocus. (Canon Europe)
There is an important practical point here: an ultra-wide lens is not simply a "landscape lens".
It can become a powerful documentary tool.
A traveller standing in a narrow European street, inside a cathedral, beside a large monument or close to a historic building may need the 15mm end of the zoom simply to establish the scene. At 30mm, the same lens becomes substantially more restrained and useful for environmental compositions.
It is also a lens with which photographers can deliberately explore perspective.
Move close to the foreground and the foreground becomes dominant. Keep the camera level and architectural distortion can be managed more effectively. Use converging verticals deliberately and the image can become expressive rather than merely corrective.
For a travel photographer, 15-30mm therefore provides a creative capability rather than merely extra coverage.
2. Canon RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM
If I had to nominate one lens as the central budget full-frame travel lens, this would be it.
The RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM is an unusually sensible compromise.
It is compact at approximately 395g, covers the classic 24mm wide-angle through to 105mm short telephoto range, incorporates optical IS and has Canon's very interesting Centre Focus Macro capability. Canon specifies a 0.5× maximum magnification in manual focus and a minimum focusing distance of 0.13m at 24mm in that mode. (Canon Europe)
That last feature is particularly valuable when travelling.
A photographer may encounter a flower, piece of local food, craft object, architectural detail, sign, texture or small souvenir and want to make a close-up photograph. The photographer does not necessarily want to carry a dedicated macro lens.
The 24-105mm can therefore become a genuine "walk-around" lens.
At 24mm it can handle environmental scenes and landscapes. Around 35-50mm it becomes useful for documentary photography and street scenes. Around 70-85mm it becomes increasingly useful for portraits and isolated details. At 105mm it provides enough compression and reach for many everyday travel subjects.
The compromise is the relatively modest maximum aperture, particularly at the telephoto end.
This is not a lens for photographers who expect f/2.8 performance in every situation. It is a lens designed around mobility, versatility and optical stabilisation.
That distinction matters.
A traveller walking through a city for eight hours may benefit more from a 395g lens covering 24-105mm than from a much larger professional zoom that remains in the hotel because it is too heavy.
3. Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM
The third full-frame lens is deliberately different.
It is the RF 50mm F1.8 STM.
The argument for including a 50mm prime in a budget travel kit is not about filling a focal-length gap. It is about adding a photographic capability that neither of the zooms provides.
The f/1.8 aperture provides substantially greater low-light capability and allows the photographer to work with shallower depth of field. Canon describes it as a compact, lightweight and affordable RF prime designed for creative and low-light photography. (Canon Service)
This becomes particularly useful after sunset.
A traveller may photograph a restaurant interior, street scene, performer, portrait, market or architectural detail in light where an f/7.1 zoom becomes much more demanding.
The 50mm focal length also encourages a different photographic discipline.
Instead of standing in one place and zooming, the photographer has to move. That can produce more deliberate compositions and stronger engagement with the subject.
On full-frame, 50mm also provides a relatively natural perspective. It is wide enough for environmental portraits but sufficiently tight to isolate subjects.
The three full-frame lenses consequently have distinct roles:
15-30mm: establish the environment.
24-105mm: photograph almost everything.
50mm F1.8: photograph differently.
That is an unusually coherent travel kit.
APS-C EOS R: exploiting the crop factor
The APS-C proposition is even more interesting.
Canon's APS-C EOS R cameras have a 1.6× crop factor relative to full-frame. That means a relatively modest physical focal length can produce impressive effective reach.
Rather than regarding APS-C as simply a smaller version of full-frame, I would exploit that characteristic.
4. Canon RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
The starting point is the RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM.
On APS-C, this produces a field of view approximately equivalent to 16-29mm on full-frame.
That makes it an excellent travel ultra-wide.
The lens is particularly attractive because it is extremely compact and light. It is designed specifically for Canon's APS-C RF-S cameras and incorporates optical IS and STM autofocus.
This is the lens for the situations in which the photographer needs to get everything into the frame.
Architecture is an obvious application, but again, travel photography should not be reduced to landscapes.
Think of the interior of a railway station, a narrow alley, a large historic building, a dramatic coastline, a marketplace or a group photograph in a confined space.
At 10mm, the photographer has a perspective that a conventional kit zoom cannot reproduce.
The 10-18mm also complements the 18-150mm almost perfectly.
There is only a small amount of focal-length duplication, but that is precisely what a good two-lens travel system should have.
5. Canon RF-S 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM
This is, in my opinion, the most important lens in the entire six-lens selection.
The RF-S 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM is the APS-C answer to the question:
How much photographic territory can one small lens cover?
Its 18-150mm range corresponds approximately to 29-240mm in full-frame terms.
That is an extraordinary range for a travel lens.
The photographer can begin at a useful moderate wide angle and finish at a substantial telephoto. Canon designed the lens as a versatile everyday zoom, with optical Image Stabilization and a compact form appropriate to APS-C cameras.
This changes the travel equation.
A photographer visiting a city might begin the morning photographing architecture at 18mm, move to street photography around 35mm, photograph people around 50-85mm and then isolate a distant architectural detail at 150mm.
The same lens can subsequently be used for wildlife, boats, sports or distant landscape details.
That versatility is precisely why I would place it at the centre of the APS-C system.
It is not the fastest lens.
Again, that is the compromise.
But travel photography is often about being ready for the subject that unexpectedly appears. A 29-240mm-equivalent range in a relatively small lens is enormously valuable in that context.
6. Canon RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM
The final lens is the RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM.
This is where the APS-C system becomes particularly compelling.
Canon gives the lens an effective full-frame-equivalent range of approximately 88-336mm, while the physical lens weighs only about 270g. Canon specifies optical IS, STM autofocus and a maximum magnification of 0.28× at 210mm. (Canon Europe)
For travel, 336mm-equivalent reach from a lens weighing around 270g is significant.
It means the photographer can include genuine telephoto photography without turning the travel bag into a wildlife-photography backpack.
Distant architectural details become accessible.
So do boats, aircraft, wildlife, birds, sports and people across streets or plazas.
And this is where I see a particularly interesting connection with the broader photographic possibilities of the APS-C EOS R system.
For someone interested in maritime observation, for example, 210mm on APS-C can be very useful for photographing vessels that are too distant for a standard travel zoom. A harbour, ferry terminal, waterfront or coastal viewpoint suddenly becomes a telephoto environment.
The lens therefore extends the travel photographer's observational range.
Why I prefer these six
There are other candidates.
The RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM, for example, is an excellent minimalist full-frame option. Canon lists it at approximately 210g and only about 58mm in length, with 4.5-stop optical IS. (Canon Europe)
I would consider it if the objective were the smallest possible full-frame travel kit.
But that is not quite the same question.
The RF 24-50mm is a superb minimalist lens.
The RF 24-105mm is a better travel photography lens.
There is another possible full-frame alternative: the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM. Canon describes it as a compact 10× optical zoom intended for everyday and travel photography, weighing approximately 750g. (Canon Europe)
It is arguably the ultimate one-lens travel solution, but I would not include it in this particular "budget six" concept. The purpose here is to show how three relatively affordable lenses can create a more flexible photographic system.
And that distinction is important.
A travel kit should not necessarily be judged by how few lenses it contains.
It should be judged by how many photographic situations it can handle for the weight and cost carried.
Full-frame versus APS-C: two different philosophies
The six lenses reveal something interesting about Canon's RF system.
The full-frame kit is:
15-30mm + 24-105mm + 50mm F1.8
It prioritises:
width + versatility + low-light capability.
The APS-C kit is:
10-18mm + 18-150mm + 55-210mm
It prioritises:
width + extraordinary range + telephoto reach.
That is why I would not simply tell a traveller that one format is better than the other.
They solve different problems.
The full-frame photographer gains the benefits of the larger sensor and has the particularly useful 50mm F1.8 available when light levels fall.
The APS-C photographer gains a remarkable amount of reach from relatively small lenses.
For a traveller concerned about weight, that second advantage is difficult to ignore.
The one-lens, two-lens and three-lens options
The beauty of these selections is that the traveller does not necessarily have to buy all three lenses.
For full-frame, my one-lens recommendation is:
RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM.
For two lenses:
RF 15-30mm + RF 24-105mm.
For three:
RF 15-30mm + RF 24-105mm + RF 50mm F1.8.
For APS-C, the equivalent progression is even more compelling.
One lens:
RF-S 18-150mm.
Two lenses:
RF-S 10-18mm + RF-S 18-150mm.
Three lenses:
RF-S 10-18mm + RF-S 18-150mm + RF-S 55-210mm.
The two-lens APS-C combination may actually be the sweet spot for many travellers.
The 10-18mm handles the genuinely wide situations while the 18-150mm handles almost everything else.
Adding the 55-210mm transforms it into a much more observational system.
My final recommendation
If I were advising a photographer buying into Canon EOS R specifically for travel photography, I would not start with the most expensive lens available.
I would start with the subject matter.
For a full-frame EOS R traveller, I would choose the:
RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM
first.
Then add the:
RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
and finally the:
RF 50mm F1.8 STM.
For an APS-C EOS R traveller, I would choose the:
RF-S 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM
first.
Then add the:
RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
and, if telephoto subjects matter:
RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM.
The central conclusion is therefore quite simple.
Full-frame gives us a compact, versatile travel system with a dedicated fast prime. APS-C gives us an exceptionally efficient travel system with remarkable telephoto reach.
And that is why I think these six lenses work particularly well as a VCP subject.
They demonstrate an important principle of photography equipment selection:
The best travel lens is not necessarily the lens with the most impressive specification. It is the lens that gives the photographer the greatest useful photographic capability for the least physical and financial burden.
For the traveller carrying an EOS R camera through a city, across a landscape, along a coastline or through a wildlife destination, that distinction can matter far more than whether a lens carries an L-series badge.
Canon's RF system now offers enough affordable optical choices for photographers to build genuinely capable travel kits around either sensor format—and without automatically turning travel photography into a heavy-equipment exercise.
