The absence of autofocus lenses from Sigma and Tamron for Canon’s full-frame RF mount has been one of the most persistent questions surrounding the EOS R system. At first glance, the explanation appeared straightforward: Canon had opened RF to third-party manufacturers only for APS-C cameras, while retaining control over the full-frame market.

By 2026, however, that explanation has become considerably less convincing.

Sigma and Tamron both now manufacture native RF-mount autofocus lenses. Yet their RF portfolios remain confined to APS-C/RF-S products. Canon executives have also indicated that Canon does not necessarily distinguish between full-frame and APS-C when considering third-party RF development. Consequently, the more interesting question is no longer simply why Canon will not allow full-frame third-party RF lenses. It is why Sigma and Tamron have not yet chosen to produce them.

The answer appears to involve a combination of licensing, technology, product strategy, development economics and competitive positioning.

From a Closed RF Ecosystem to Licensed Third-Party Lenses

When Canon introduced the RF mount in 2018, the company retained tight control over the electronic interface and autofocus system. For several years, third-party manufacturers could produce lenses for Canon's mirrorless cameras only through approaches that did not provide the same native integration as an officially licensed RF product.

The situation changed significantly in 2024. Sigma announced a group of native RF-mount lenses, beginning with the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary and subsequently adding several other APS-C designs. Sigma explicitly stated that these products were developed, manufactured and sold under licence from Canon.

Tamron likewise entered the RF ecosystem with APS-C lenses. Its current Canon RF portfolio includes the 11-20mm f/2.8, 17-70mm f/2.8 and 18-300mm lenses, all designed for APS-C rather than full-frame sensors.

This was an important change. It demonstrated that Canon was prepared to license aspects of the RF system to independent manufacturers. It also demonstrated that Sigma and Tamron were willing to invest in native RF engineering.

But it left a major question unanswered: why stop at APS-C?

Canon's Position Has Become More Ambiguous

Canon's public position became particularly interesting at CP+ 2026.

Canon executive Go Tokura was asked directly why third-party manufacturers were producing RF-S lenses but not full-frame RF lenses. His response was that Canon does not really differentiate between full-frame and APS-C in this regard, and that the apparent distinction is largely an observation based on what third-party manufacturers have actually released. He also stated that Canon cannot discuss the contents of its contracts with external manufacturers.

This is important.

It does not prove that Canon has given Sigma or Tamron unrestricted permission to manufacture any full-frame RF lens they want. Contractual arrangements remain confidential. Nor does it prove that Canon is actively encouraging direct competition with its own premium RF lenses.

It does, however, weaken the simple explanation that Canon has categorically banned third-party full-frame RF autofocus lenses.

The distinction between permission to develop and a commercially attractive opportunity to develop therefore becomes critical.

Technical Access Is Not the Same as Technical Simplicity

There is also a technological dimension.

Tamron explained as early as 2019 that developing lenses for closed mirrorless systems such as Canon RF and Nikon Z required considerable research and development because manufacturers did not disclose all the technical details of their systems. Tamron specifically described the reverse-engineering challenge associated with such mounts.

The current RF licensing arrangement has clearly improved the situation. Sigma's RF products use an autofocus and communication-control algorithm specifically developed for Canon RF and support functions including continuous autofocus, in-camera aberration correction and image stabilization where supported.

Nevertheless, developing a full-frame RF lens is not simply a matter of changing the physical mount on an existing Sony E or L-mount product.

A manufacturer must establish reliable communication with the camera, autofocus behaviour, image stabilization interaction, correction profiles, firmware support and long-term compatibility. Full-frame professional lenses also impose much greater optical, mechanical and autofocus-performance demands than many compact APS-C products.

Thus, licensing removes one barrier; it does not eliminate development costs or technical risk.

Why APS-C Was the Logical Starting Point

There is a strong strategic argument for beginning with APS-C.

Sigma's initial RF products were already established DC DN designs. Converting existing optical platforms to RF therefore offered a relatively controlled route into the Canon ecosystem. Sigma's RF portfolio has subsequently expanded considerably, but it remains dominated by APS-C designs.

The same logic applies to Tamron.

An existing APS-C lens can be adapted to another mount and potentially sold to an additional customer base without the company having to develop an entirely new full-frame optical platform.

Full-frame lenses are a different proposition.

A new 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 100-400mm or 150-600mm designed specifically for RF would have to compete directly with Canon's established RF portfolio. The investment would be substantial, while the manufacturer would have no guarantee that enough Canon users would purchase the third-party alternative.

The Canon Lens Portfolio Is a Serious Commercial Barrier

Canon has built an unusually extensive native RF catalogue. By 2026, the RF system has grown to almost 70 lenses, according to Canon's CP+ discussions. Canon also continues to add approximately six to eight lenses per year.

This matters enormously to Sigma and Tamron.

Consider the conventional third-party strategy of offering a lower-priced alternative to a manufacturer's premium lens. On Sony E-mount, for example, Sigma and Tamron have built substantial businesses by offering products that compete with or complement Sony's own lenses.

Canon RF is different.

Canon already has strong native offerings across the major professional categories. A third-party manufacturer therefore has to identify a genuine product gap, rather than merely reproduce an existing Canon specification at a lower price.

That may explain why Canon's third-party strategy has initially been concentrated on APS-C, where Sigma and Tamron can add capabilities that Canon's own RF-S portfolio does not fully cover.

The Economics of the Full-Frame RF Market

The interchangeable-lens camera market is mature and highly competitive. Every new lens requires expenditure on optical design, mechanical engineering, autofocus systems, firmware, tooling, production, quality control, inventory and marketing.

For Sigma or Tamron, the question is therefore not:

“Can we make this lens for RF?”

It is:

“Can we sell enough of this lens for RF to justify making it?”

That distinction is fundamental.

A lens developed for Sony E, Nikon Z and possibly L-mount can spread its development cost across several markets. Adding Canon RF makes the economics more attractive only if Canon's user base generates sufficient incremental sales.

The calculation becomes even more complicated when the RF version would compete against Canon's own products, while Canon controls the licensing relationship and the technical environment.

This helps explain why the absence of full-frame RF lenses should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of hostility between Canon and third-party manufacturers.

It may instead represent risk management.

Sigma's Position Is Particularly Interesting

Sigma's CEO Kazuto Yamaki was asked again at CP+ 2026 whether full-frame Sigma lenses for Canon RF were getting closer. His answer remained that he could not comment.

That is not a rejection.

Nor is it confirmation.

The wording is therefore significant mainly because Sigma has already demonstrated that it can work within the RF licensing environment. The company has developed a substantial RF-S portfolio and has established the necessary engineering infrastructure for native RF autofocus communication.

The remaining question is strategic: which full-frame products would Sigma consider sufficiently differentiated and commercially attractive?

Sigma is unlikely to enter the full-frame RF market merely for the sake of having a presence there. Its strongest opportunity would probably involve lenses where its optical design, size, price or performance creates a meaningful alternative to Canon.

Tamron Has Been More Explicit

Tamron has provided perhaps the clearest indication of the present situation.

At CP+ 2026, Tamron product-development executive Keiya Nishimura was asked specifically about full-frame Canon RF lenses. He declined to provide details but acknowledged strong market demand and said the company was carefully evaluating its development priorities.

That answer is revealing.

Tamron is not saying that full-frame RF is impossible.

It is not saying that Canon has prohibited it.

And it is not saying that there is no demand.

Instead, it describes the issue as one of development priorities.

That strongly supports the proposition that the central question has moved from whether Canon will permit third-party RF lenses toward whether Sigma and Tamron consider particular full-frame RF products worth developing.

The Continuing Importance of EF

There is another factor that is easily overlooked: Canon's enormous EF lens legacy.

Millions of Canon photographers already possess EF lenses, and Canon's EF-EOS R adapters provide a practical bridge between DSLR-era lenses and the RF system.

For Sigma and Tamron, this means that some Canon users can already employ excellent third-party EF lenses on EOS R cameras. The incentive to immediately replace those products with native RF versions may therefore be weaker than it was during the transition from DSLR to mirrorless.

A photographer who already owns a Sigma or Tamron EF 24-70mm, 70-200mm or 150-600mm does not necessarily need an RF replacement.

Native RF becomes most compelling when it offers something genuinely better: smaller dimensions, improved autofocus, better optical performance, superior stabilization, improved video functionality or a substantially more attractive price.

What Happens Next?

The situation in 2026 therefore looks considerably more fluid than it did two years ago.

Canon has demonstrated a willingness to license RF technology to third-party manufacturers. Sigma has established a substantial RF-S portfolio. Tamron has entered the RF market and explicitly acknowledges demand for full-frame RF products. Canon itself says it does not necessarily make a formal distinction between full-frame and APS-C when discussing third-party participation.

Yet no full-frame Sigma or Tamron autofocus lens has appeared.

The most plausible explanation is therefore not one single barrier.

It is an intersection of:

licensing + technical development + engineering cost + product differentiation + Canon competition + expected sales volume + corporate development priorities.

In other words, the RF mount may now be sufficiently open for third-party manufacturers to enter, while the full-frame RF market remains sufficiently difficult for them to enter selectively.

Conclusion

The question “Why aren't Sigma and Tamron making full-frame Canon RF lenses?” once appeared to have a simple answer: Canon was keeping the full-frame RF mount closed.

By 2026, that explanation is no longer sufficient.

Canon has licensed native RF autofocus development to Sigma and Tamron. Both companies have demonstrated that they can develop and support RF products. Canon's executives now describe the full-frame/APS-C distinction more ambiguously than they did when third-party RF lenses first appeared.

The remaining obstacle appears to be much more complex.

Canon controls the platform, but Sigma and Tamron control their own investment decisions.

For Sigma and Tamron, a full-frame RF lens must therefore pass several tests simultaneously: it must be technically achievable, commercially viable, sufficiently differentiated from Canon's own products and capable of generating an adequate return on development investment.

That is why the absence of full-frame Sigma and Tamron RF lenses should not necessarily be interpreted as evidence that Canon has simply “locked them out”.

The more accurate conclusion is that Canon RF has moved from a predominantly closed ecosystem toward a licensed ecosystem — but an open door does not automatically make every room commercially worth entering.

And that may be the most important development to watch as the RF system enters its second decade.
