Vernon Chalmers Photography (VCP) Maritime Studies is an ongoing programme of maritime observation, documentary photography, ship spotting, vessel identification, research and visual documentation centred primarily on the Cape Town and Table Bay maritime environment.
The programme has developed through practical field observation: observing the maritime environment, photographing vessels and places, identifying what has been observed, researching its context and progressively building a photographic record.
It is therefore more than a collection of ship photographs.
Maritime Studies brings together photography, observation, maritime research, environmental awareness and historical documentation within the wider educational and documentary approach of Vernon Chalmers Photography. The associated Vernon Chalmers History Project provides a broader historical framework for understanding contemporary photographic observations.

The Maritime Observation System (MOS)
The Maritime Observation System (MOS) is the operational methodology underlying VCP Maritime Studies.
MOS is not a physical observatory or a single piece of equipment. It is a structured approach to field observation and photographic documentation.
A maritime observation session begins with awareness of the environment before the camera is necessarily raised. Weather, light, sea conditions, vessels, infrastructure, navigational features, coastline and other activity are considered as parts of the observation.
The resulting photographs can then be connected to identification, research and documentation.
The MOS Process
OBSERVE → PHOTOGRAPH → IDENTIFY → INVESTIGATE → DOCUMENT → ARCHIVE → INTERPRET
Through repeated observation, MOS can build a chronological visual record of vessels, harbour activity, infrastructure, coastline and the wider maritime environment.
What MOS Observes
The maritime environment is considered as an interconnected system.
This can include:
- commercial and specialist vessels
- harbour tugs and service vessels
- port and harbour infrastructure
- lighthouses and navigation aids
- coastline and shoreline conditions
- weather, light and sea state
- maritime approaches and anchorage areas
- coastal biodiversity
- environmental change
- relationships between vessels and the Cape Town landscape
The vessel is therefore not always the sole subject.

Ship Spotting and Vessel Documentation
Ship spotting is one of the principal photographic applications of MOS.
Within VCP Maritime Studies, ship spotting combines visual observation with photographic documentation and vessel identification.
A vessel observation may involve recording its name, IMO number, type, flag, location and photographic circumstances, followed where appropriate by further research and comparison with available maritime information. The existing research documentation describes this process as including vessel identification, AIS cross-checking and image/catalogue records.
The photographic record can therefore become a starting point for a much broader investigation.
From Vessel to Record
The process is deliberately cumulative:
A vessel is observed.
The vessel is photographed.
Its identity is established or confirmed.
Relevant maritime information is researched.
The photographs and information become part of the VCP record.
One documented example is DESERT DIAMOND, while the existing maritime archive also includes vessel studies such as PACIFIC WORLD, MAMOLA RELIANCE, FOREST 6, YA TOIVO and PRINCE OF SEAS.

The image illustrates an important principle of MOS: the photograph is both a visual record and a starting point for further investigation.
The vessel can be examined photographically for its name, structural characteristics, deck equipment, bridge arrangement, communications equipment and other identifying features. The resulting image can then be connected with the vessel's wider maritime record.

Table Bay as a Maritime Observation Environment
Table Bay provides the principal geographical environment for the current Maritime Studies programme.
It offers a rich observational field in which commercial shipping, harbour infrastructure, coastal landscape, navigation aids, weather and environmental conditions interact.
The same geographical setting also provides fixed points of reference.
Table Mountain, the coastline, harbour structures and lighthouses can appear repeatedly in photographs, allowing vessels and maritime activity to be considered within a consistent geographical context.
This repeated observation is important.
A photograph records a moment.
A sequence of photographs recorded from related locations over time can begin to reveal change.
That change may involve vessel design, shipping activity, harbour infrastructure, coastal development or the visual character of the maritime environment.

Beyond the Vessel
Maritime Studies is deliberately broader than ship spotting.
The project also considers the places and infrastructure that make maritime activity possible.
This includes lighthouses, harbour structures, navigation infrastructure, coastal observation points and the changing relationship between the built environment and the sea.
The Milnerton Lighthouse is an important example of this wider approach.
It is simultaneously a maritime structure, a navigational feature, a historical subject and a photographic observation point within the Table Bay environment.
Consequently, Maritime Studies can move naturally between:

The Canon Maritime Photography System
The camera system is the photographic instrumentation of MOS.
Equipment is selected according to the observational task rather than treating one camera and lens combination as suitable for every maritime situation.
Canon EOS R6 Mark III + RF 800mm F/11 IS STM
The Canon EOS R6 Mark III with RF 800mm F/11 IS STM provides the long-range component of the current maritime system.
Its principal role is distant vessel detail and precision observation.
The combination is particularly appropriate when a vessel is distant from the observation point and details such as bridge structure, hull markings or identifying features need to be resolved from shore.
Canon EOS 6D Mark II + EF 100–400mm
The Canon EOS 6D Mark II with EF 100–400mm provides flexible telephoto coverage.
Its zoom range permits movement between relatively broad environmental compositions and tighter vessel documentation without changing the basic observation position.
It also represents the continuing usefulness of Canon's EF system alongside EOS R technology.
Canon PowerShot G3 X
The Canon PowerShot G3 X occupies a different position within the wider maritime photographic system.
Its 24–600mm-equivalent zoom is suited to environmental maritime photography where the objective is to record the relationship between vessel, sea, coastline, weather and surrounding landscape.

Maritime Fieldwork
The Maritime Studies programme develops through ongoing field observation in and around the Table Bay environment.
A session may concentrate on vessel traffic; another may provide an opportunity to investigate a lighthouse, harbour structure or environmental feature; another may produce a combination of ship photography and broader landscape documentation.
This flexibility is important to MOS.
The system is structured, but the maritime environment is dynamic.
Observation therefore remains responsive to what is actually encountered in the field.
The research record describes the current programme as ongoing Table Bay field observation incorporating ship spotting, environmental observation and photographic documentation.

From Observation to Visual Historiography
One of the longer-term possibilities of Maritime Studies is the development of visual historiography.
A single photograph records a moment.
Repeated photographs create a sequence.
A sequence, when properly located, identified and interpreted, can contribute to an understanding of change over time.
In this sense, systematic maritime photography can become more than contemporary documentation.
It can contribute to a future visual record of:
- vessels and vessel design
- shipping activity
- harbour development
- maritime infrastructure
- coastal change
- navigation
- environmental conditions
- the changing visual character of Table Bay
The objective is not to claim that every photograph is automatically historical evidence.
Rather, continuity, context and documentation can give a photographic archive increasing historical significance over time.
Maritime Studies and the Vernon Chalmers History Project
The Vernon Chalmers History Project provides the wider historical framework for this work.
The History Project is a digital initiative concerned with the socio-political and ecological development of Cape Town and the Western Cape across a long historical period, combining archival research, contemporary photography and philosophical inquiry.
Maritime Studies extends this approach into the contemporary maritime environment.
Where historical research investigates what has happened, maritime fieldwork creates an ongoing photographic record of what is happening now.

Vernon Chalmers Photography Maritime Studies is an evolving field of work.
