Learn long exposure photography in this Vernon Chalmers Photography workshop for Canon photographers. Master shutter speed control, ND filters, and wide-angle landscape techniques through theory and guided field sessions.
Vernon Chalmers Photography Long Exposure Photography Training Sessions
Theory and Field Training for Canon PhotographersThe Vernon Chalmers Photography Long Exposure Workshop is designed for developing photographers who want to understand and apply the creative and technical principles of long exposure photography.
Participants will learn how to control shutter speed, light, and movement to produce compelling landscape and seascape images. The workshop combines classroom-based theory with guided field sessions, allowing photographers to apply techniques in real shooting environments.
The training focuses on practical workflows using Canon cameras and wide-angle lenses (approximately 14mm–40mm).
Workshop Structure
1. Introduction to Long Exposure Photography
Understanding how long exposure transforms motion and light.
Topics covered:
- The creative purpose of long exposure photography
- Controlling motion in landscapes and seascapes
- The relationship between shutter speed and visual effect
- Examples: water movement, cloud motion, and atmospheric conditions
2. Camera Setup for Long Exposure
Configuring Canon cameras for consistent results.
Topics covered:
- Manual exposure control
- Aperture selection for landscape photography
- ISO management for image quality
- Using Live View and histogram evaluation
- Stabilising the camera for long exposures
3. Essential Equipment
Understanding the tools required for long exposure photography.
Equipment covered:
Wide-angle lenses (14mm–40mm range)
- Stable tripod systems
- Neutral Density (ND) filters
- Remote shutter release or interval timer
- Lens hoods and environmental protection
4. Understanding Neutral Density Filters (optional)
How ND filters extend shutter speed in bright conditions.
Topics covered:
- What ND filters do and how they work
- Common strengths (3-stop, 6-stop, 10-stop)
- Exposure adjustments when using ND filters
- Calculating shutter speeds with filters
5. Exposure Workflow
A step-by-step workflow for reliable long exposure images.
Workflow includes:
- Compose and focus the scene
- Set base exposure without filter
- Apply ND filter and calculate new exposure
- Stabilise camera and trigger shutter
- Evaluate exposure and adjust
- Field Session
From R950 for the developing / more advanced Canon EOS / EOS R camera per training session (up to four hours 4+).
R2 650 for three sessions one-on-one Photography Training Sessions (up to four hours 4+ each).
Sessions are structured to meet specific learning requirements (camera settings and composition). Landscape theory and practical sessions
Participants apply techniques during guided field shooting.
Field training includes:
- Selecting strong long exposure compositions
- Working with moving water and coastal environments
- Controlling shutter speeds for different visual effects
- Managing changing light conditions
- Reviewing and refining exposures in the field
Image Review and Technique Refinement
Discussion of captured images and improvement strategies.
Topics include:
- Exposure evaluation
- Composition analysis
- Managing highlights and shadows
- Practical troubleshooting
