What Should We Expect?

The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS is a reminder that a camera does not necessarily need a large sensor, interchangeable lenses or a professional body to offer something genuinely useful to a photographer.

Its defining feature was much simpler.

Reach.

The SX740 HS combined a 20.3-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with a 40× optical zoom covering an extraordinary 24–960mm equivalent range. Canon also fitted optical image stabilisation and 4K video into a remarkably small travel-oriented camera.

That combination made the SX740 HS a very different proposition from the PowerShot G7 X series.

The G7 X is fundamentally about a relatively large one-inch sensor and a fast, versatile short zoom.

The SX-series is about something else:

How much photographic reach can be put into a small camera?

That remains a compelling question in 2026.

A possible Canon PowerShot SX750 HS therefore deserves to be considered not simply as an updated SX740 HS, but as a test of whether Canon can modernise the compact superzoom without sacrificing the characteristic feature that makes the series distinctive.

The 24–960mm Concept Should Remain Central

The first requirement is obvious.

If Canon produces an SX750 HS, it should retain the philosophy of the SX740 HS.

The existing 40× zoom covers 24–960mm equivalent.

That is an enormous focal-length range for a camera that can be carried almost anywhere.

At the wide end, 24mm is useful for landscapes, architecture, travel scenes and environmental photography.

At the long end, 960mm equivalent opens up an entirely different photographic world.

Distant wildlife.

Birds.

Aircraft.

Ships.

Sports.

The moon.

Details on buildings.

Subjects that would otherwise require a large telephoto lens.

This is where the SX concept remains fundamentally different from the smartphone.

A smartphone may offer impressive computational zoom, but the SX-series begins with real optical reach.

A future SX750 should therefore not sacrifice excessive focal length simply to chase sensor size or a thinner body.

The zoom is the reason the camera exists.

More Resolution Is Not Necessarily the Answer

The SX740 HS already has approximately 20.3 effective megapixels.

It would be tempting to expect Canon to increase this substantially.

I would regard that as secondary.

At the equivalent of 960mm, the more important issue is whether the camera can actually resolve useful detail at the subject.

A higher-resolution sensor is only beneficial if the lens, autofocus, stabilisation and processing can take advantage of it.

For a superzoom camera, therefore, pixel quality matters more than pixel count.

A modern sensor could provide better dynamic range, cleaner high-ISO images, improved colour and faster readout without necessarily requiring a dramatic increase in resolution.

That would be a much more meaningful upgrade.

Future Use Case: Canon PowerShot SX750 HS

The Biggest Improvement Should Be Autofocus

This is probably where a modern SX750 could make the greatest practical difference.

The SX740 HS belongs to an earlier generation of compact-camera autofocus. Its specification lists conventional TTL autofocus rather than the sophisticated subject-recognition systems now found throughout Canon's EOS R range.

Imagine combining the SX-series' 960mm-equivalent reach with modern Canon subject detection.

Birds could become considerably easier to acquire.

Aircraft could be tracked more reliably.

Moving people could be recognised automatically.

Wildlife could remain in focus more consistently.

Even distant ships could benefit when the camera is used in challenging atmospheric conditions.

This is where Canon's current compact-camera technology strategy becomes particularly relevant.

Canon has said that its next compact cameras should offer new technology or a new use case, rather than simply reproduce older compact-camera formulas.

Modern autofocus would be an obvious way to achieve that.

Faster Sensor Readout Could Transform the SX Concept

The SX750 HS would also benefit enormously from a faster sensor.

The problem with long-zoom compact cameras is not simply focusing.

It is photographing moving subjects at extreme focal lengths.

At 960mm equivalent, even relatively small movements are magnified dramatically.

A faster sensor could improve electronic-shutter operation, reduce rolling-shutter distortion, improve the responsiveness of the electronic view on the rear screen and give the autofocus system more information to work with.

This could turn the SX-series from a camera that is primarily useful for reaching distant subjects into one that is also capable of photographing them reliably while they are moving.

That would be a substantial generational improvement.

Stabilisation Becomes Critical at 960mm

The longer the focal length, the more important stabilisation becomes.

Canon already equipped the SX740 HS with optical image stabilisation.

A future model should substantially improve this capability.

But again, the specification should not be the objective.

The real question is what happens at 960mm equivalent when the photographer is handholding the camera.

Can the framing remain stable?

Can the autofocus system stay on the subject?

Can the camera produce a sharp image at a shutter speed that would otherwise be impossible?

Can video remain usable while zoomed in?

Those are the practical measures of success.

At extreme focal lengths, even a small improvement in stabilisation can have a disproportionately large effect on usability.

A Better Electronic Viewfinder Would Be Valuable

The SX740 HS does not have an electronic viewfinder. Canon's specifications instead list a 3-inch rear LCD.

This is one area where I would strongly consider a change.

A small electronic viewfinder could make the camera substantially more effective outdoors.

At 960mm equivalent, composing accurately on a rear screen can become difficult, particularly in bright sunlight.

A viewfinder would also provide another physical connection between photographer and subject.

That matters when tracking birds, aircraft or distant moving objects.

The engineering challenge would be fitting an EVF into a compact body without compromising the pocketable form factor.

But if Canon can achieve it without making the camera substantially larger, it would be one of the most useful upgrades available.

Keep the Pocketable Form Factor

This is where Canon needs discipline.

The SX750 HS should not become a miniature bridge camera.

There are already cameras designed to provide larger sensors, larger bodies and substantial telephoto capability.

The SX-series occupies a different niche.

Its greatest advantage is that the photographer can carry it without thinking about carrying a camera.

That makes it particularly attractive for travel.

A photographer can walk through a city with the SX750 in a small bag.

A hiker can carry it without a telephoto lens.

A traveller can photograph a distant landmark without changing lenses.

A family can take it on holiday without learning an interchangeable-lens system.

And a photographer can suddenly discover a bird, aircraft or vessel at a considerable distance and have real optical reach immediately available.

That convenience is part of the photographic capability.

Computational Photography Could Help at the Long End

A modern SX750 should also make intelligent use of computational processing.

A 1/2.3-inch sensor has obvious physical limitations.

At 960mm equivalent, atmospheric haze, vibration, diffraction and limited light all become significant.

Computational processing could help compensate for some of those limitations.

Better noise reduction could preserve detail at higher ISO.

Lens correction could improve the image across the enormous zoom range.

Multi-frame processing could potentially improve difficult exposures.

Subject recognition could help the autofocus system prioritise the intended subject.

And intelligent sharpening could help extract more useful detail from distant subjects.

The important distinction is that computational processing should improve what the camera captured, not manufacture a distant subject that was never recorded.

That would fit well with Canon's broader approach to AI-assisted imaging.

Wildlife and Bird Photography Could Be a Major Use Case

This is where the SX750 concept becomes particularly interesting from a VCP perspective.

A 960mm-equivalent maximum focal length is not a substitute for a professional 600mm or 800mm lens.

The sensor is much smaller.

The optical system is necessarily more compromised.

Low-light performance will remain limited.

But that is not the relevant comparison.

The relevant comparison is:

What can a photographer actually carry?

For a traveller or casual nature photographer, a tiny superzoom capable of reaching 960mm equivalent can open photographic opportunities that simply would not exist with a conventional compact camera.

Birds in distant trees.

Waterbirds across wetlands.

Animals on the opposite side of a reserve.

Ships offshore.

Aircraft approaching an airport.

The moon against the evening sky.

Those are precisely the situations in which extreme optical reach becomes more valuable than interchangeable-lens flexibility.

Maritime Photography Is Another Natural Use Case

The SX-series also has an interesting application in maritime observation.

From a shoreline location, vessels are frequently too distant for conventional short telephoto lenses.

The ability to move from 24mm to approximately 960mm equivalent without changing lenses would allow the photographer to establish the wider scene and then immediately isolate details.

A ship's bridge.

A funnel.

A distinctive superstructure.

A flag.

A name or identifying feature.

A distant pilot vessel.

The SX concept therefore fits naturally into an observational workflow.

It does not replace a professional telephoto system.

It provides reach when reach is more important than ultimate image quality.

That distinction is important.

Video Should Improve, But Remain Secondary

The SX740 HS was already significant because it brought 4K video to the SX series. Canon specifically highlighted this as a first for the PowerShot SX line when the camera was introduced in 2018.

A successor should naturally improve video quality, autofocus, stabilisation and connectivity.

But I would not make video the defining feature.

Canon already has the PowerShot V-series for users who are specifically seeking a compact video-oriented camera. Canon's current strategy indicates that it intends to cover different compact-camera use cases rather than make every PowerShot serve the same audience.

The SX750 should therefore remain primarily a still-photography superzoom that also performs useful video.

Connectivity Should Become Invisible

Modern compact-camera users expect the camera to work with a smartphone.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth should therefore be fast and dependable.

Image transfer should be simple.

Remote shooting should be straightforward.

USB-C charging would make sense for a modern travel camera.

The objective should be to make the technology disappear.

Take the photograph.

Transfer it.

Share it.

Continue travelling.

The camera should not become a technical project in itself.

The SX750 Should Not Try to Become a G7 X

Canon's PowerShot lineup is becoming more interesting precisely because its different products can serve different purposes.

The G7 X concept is about relatively high image quality from a compact body and a fast short zoom.

The V-series is increasingly focused on video and creator workflows.

The SX-series has a much simpler proposition:

Extreme optical reach in a compact camera.

That distinction should remain.

If Canon puts a much larger sensor into the SX750 but reduces the zoom dramatically, it may produce a technically superior camera that is actually a less convincing SX.

The success of the product should therefore be measured by how effectively Canon balances:

reach, size, image quality, autofocus, stabilisation and usability.

What Would Make the SX750 HS Worth the Upgrade?

This is ultimately the same question applied throughout the VCP Future Canon Expectations series.

A new model should not be considered successful simply because it has a new processor or a higher megapixel count.

The SX750 HS would need to produce a noticeable difference in the field.

Modern subject-detection autofocus would be important.

Faster sensor readout would be important.

Better stabilisation would be important.

Improved high-ISO performance would be important.

A better electronic viewfinder would be valuable.

More effective computational processing would be valuable.

And retaining the extraordinary optical zoom would be essential.

The camera does not need to compete with the EOS R system.

It needs to complement it.

A photographer carrying an R6 Mark III and a long telephoto lens is pursuing maximum image quality and control.

A photographer carrying an SX750 HS is pursuing something different:

maximum photographic opportunity with minimum equipment.

That is a legitimate photographic philosophy.

The Future of the Superzoom Compact

Canon's current statements about the resurgence of compact cameras suggest that the PowerShot category is not simply being kept alive for nostalgic reasons. The company sees new users entering photography and increasingly choosing a dedicated camera alongside their smartphone.

That creates an interesting opportunity for the SX line.

The smartphone has become exceptionally good at wide-angle and computational photography.

The SX-series can offer something a smartphone fundamentally struggles to replicate:

a very small camera with a very large optical reach.

If Canon can combine that reach with modern autofocus, faster processing, improved stabilisation, better sensor performance and a more capable viewing system, the SX750 HS could become considerably more than an updated SX740.

It could become one of the most practical travel and observation cameras in the PowerShot range.

And that is ultimately how I would judge the future SX750 HS.

Not by how closely its specification sheet resembles an EOS R camera.

Not by how many megapixels Canon manages to fit onto its sensor.

And not simply by whether it carries a new model number.

The real test is much simpler:

How much photographic opportunity can the photographer carry in a pocket?

If Canon can answer that question convincingly, the PowerShot SX750 HS would have a very clear reason to exist.
