There may never be a Canon PowerShot SX80 HS.
There is currently no confirmed Canon announcement for such a camera, and there is no guarantee that the long-running SX series will receive another generation. Canon's PowerShot strategy has changed considerably since the last major SX models appeared.
But that does not make the idea of an SX80 HS irrelevant.
Quite the opposite.
The continued popularity of compact cameras has demonstrated that there is still a market for dedicated cameras that offer something a smartphone cannot easily reproduce. Canon itself now describes the SX series as its high-magnification zoom range, while its broader 2026 strategy acknowledges that compact cameras are once again attracting attention.
That creates an interesting question for the future:
If Canon were to revive the SX line, what should an SX80 HS actually become?
The answer should not simply be another incremental update.
It should be a reconsideration of what a compact superzoom can do.

The SX740 HS Is Still the Starting Point
The current PowerShot SX740 HS is an extraordinary example of how long a successful compact-camera concept can remain relevant.
Introduced in 2018, it combines a 20.3-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with a 40x optical zoom covering the equivalent of 24–960mm. It includes optical image stabilisation, a built-in flash and 4K video, while weighing approximately 299g. There is no electronic viewfinder.
On paper, much of this technology now looks dated.
The photographic idea does not.
A pocketable camera beginning at a genuinely useful 24mm wide angle and extending to a 960mm-equivalent telephoto remains an extremely powerful proposition.
It is particularly attractive for travel, aviation, wildlife observation, maritime photography, family events, landscapes and situations where carrying an interchangeable-lens camera and telephoto lens is impractical.
The SX740 HS therefore provides an important lesson.
The value of the SX concept has never really been the sensor. It has been the reach.

The SX80 HS Should Preserve the Superzoom Principle
If Canon ever produces an SX80 HS, I would not want it to lose its defining characteristic in pursuit of conventional compact-camera specifications.
The camera should remain small.
It should remain simple.
And, most importantly, it should remain a superzoom.
The temptation would be to give it a larger sensor, a dramatically brighter lens and a much larger body.
That could produce a technically superior camera.
It could also destroy the reason for owning an SX.
Canon already has larger-sensor PowerShot models and an extensive EOS R system. An SX80 HS needs to occupy a different space.
Its central question should be:
How much photographic reach can Canon put into a genuinely portable camera?

The Smartphone Is Not the Competition in Every Situation
Canon's executives have acknowledged an interesting change in the compact-camera market.
The company's research suggests that many current compact-camera buyers are not traditional camera owners moving down from interchangeable-lens systems. They are new users who already have smartphones but want another device for particular photographic experiences and use cases. Canon has also said that its future compact products need to provide new technologies or new applications.
That is highly relevant to the SX concept.
A smartphone is exceptionally good at wide-angle photography, computational processing and immediate sharing.
It is not a substitute for a 960mm-equivalent optical zoom.
This is where the SX80 HS could remain distinctive.
A person standing beside the sea could photograph a distant vessel.
A traveller could photograph wildlife without carrying a telephoto lens.
An aviation enthusiast could photograph aircraft approaching an airport.
A birdwatcher could document a distant bird.
A visitor could photograph the Moon.
These are not simply better versions of smartphone photography.
They are different photographic opportunities.
What Happened to Canon PowerShot SX80 HS?
Reach Should Come Before Megapixels
I would therefore resist the temptation to define the SX80 HS primarily around resolution.
A hypothetical 30MP or 40MP sensor would sound impressive.
But more pixels do not automatically produce better long-distance photographs.
At extreme focal lengths, atmospheric haze, heat shimmer, subject movement, lens resolution and stabilisation can become much more important than nominal sensor resolution.
The priority should instead be a modern sensor with good dynamic range, efficient readout and strong high-ISO performance.
If Canon could significantly improve image quality without substantially increasing the physical size of the camera, that would be far more valuable.
The SX80 HS should be designed around the complete optical system rather than a headline megapixel figure.
The Lens Would Be the Heart of the Camera
The existing 24–960mm equivalent range is already compelling.
A future SX80 HS does not necessarily need 50x, 60x or 80x optical zoom simply because those numbers sound impressive.
There is a point at which additional focal length becomes increasingly difficult to exploit.
At 960mm equivalent, even small camera movements become highly visible.
The challenge is therefore not simply reaching farther.
It is making extreme focal lengths usable.
A future SX lens should ideally deliver improved optical sharpness, better stabilisation, faster and more reliable focusing and improved control of chromatic aberration and other optical artefacts.
A modest increase in reach accompanied by substantially better image quality could be more useful than an enormous increase in zoom ratio.
Autofocus Is Where the Biggest Modernisation Could Occur
The autofocus system may be the single most obvious area in which an SX80 HS could leap forward.
The SX740 HS uses conventional TTL autofocus technology.
A modern Canon compact could potentially benefit from technologies developed in the EOS R system.
That does not mean turning an SX80 HS into an EOS R camera.
It means bringing more intelligent subject recognition and tracking into a superzoom format.
Imagine pointing the camera toward a distant bird.
Instead of simply focusing somewhere within the frame, the camera could recognise the bird, maintain focus as it moves and help the photographer keep it framed at extreme focal lengths.
The same principle could apply to aircraft, boats, animals and people.
This would transform the SX from a long-zoom camera into a long-zoom observation camera.
Birds in Flight Would Be a Serious Test
For Birds in Flight, a superzoom presents a particularly interesting challenge.
The reach is attractive.
The small sensor and relatively modest maximum aperture at the telephoto end are limitations.
But modern computational processing and autofocus could potentially compensate for some of those limitations.
An SX80 HS would not replace an EOS R6 Mark III with a long RF telephoto lens for serious BIF photography.
That is not the point.
Instead, it could become a remarkably capable opportunity camera.
The photographer sees a bird unexpectedly.
The camera is already in a pocket or small bag.
The lens extends.
The autofocus acquires the subject.
The stabilisation settles the composition.
The photographer gets the photograph.
That is an entirely different proposition from carrying a professional wildlife system.
Stabilisation Becomes Critical at 960mm
At the long end of the zoom, image stabilisation is not a luxury.
It is fundamental.
At a 960mm-equivalent field of view, even a small movement can shift the subject substantially across the frame.
A future SX80 HS should therefore place stabilisation at the centre of its design.
Canon's existing SX740 HS already includes optical image stabilisation.
The next generation should ideally provide more effective stabilisation, better coordination between optical and electronic processing, and more intelligent recognition of the photographer's movement.
The objective should not merely be a larger numerical stabilisation rating.
It should be a more stable viewfinder or LCD composition and a higher probability of obtaining a sharp image.
An Electronic Viewfinder Could Change the Camera
One of the most obvious omissions from the SX740 HS is an electronic viewfinder.
The camera relies on its rear 3-inch LCD display.
For casual wide-angle photography, that is perfectly workable.
At 960mm equivalent, it becomes considerably less satisfactory.
An EVF would provide the photographer with a more stable shooting position and make it easier to locate distant subjects at extreme focal lengths.
It would also make the SX80 HS more usable in bright sunlight.
The challenge would be fitting a useful EVF into a genuinely compact body.
That is precisely the kind of engineering problem that could make a new SX interesting.
Computational Photography Should Work for the Lens
Canon's current approach to AI is particularly relevant here.
Canon executives have described the company's intention to use AI primarily to reproduce scenes more accurately rather than generate imagery. Areas mentioned include noise reduction, colour correction, aberration and distortion correction, upscaling and improved subject recognition.
A future SX80 HS could benefit enormously from this philosophy.
At extreme telephoto distances, the camera could use computational processing to improve noise characteristics, correct optical imperfections and improve perceived detail.
This is particularly important because a small superzoom camera has less optical and sensor performance to work with than a professional interchangeable-lens system.
Computational photography could therefore become a genuine extension of the optical system.
The important distinction is that the camera should improve the photograph captured by the lens, not invent details that were never photographed.
Image Quality Should Improve Without Losing Portability
The SX80 HS should also be careful about sensor size.
A larger sensor would improve image quality.
But it would also make the lens larger.
This is the fundamental trade-off in compact superzoom design.
A 1-inch sensor with a 24–600mm equivalent lens is one type of camera.
A small sensor with a 24–960mm equivalent lens is another.
Neither is automatically better.
The SX concept exists precisely because the photographer values extreme reach in a compact package.
The engineering objective should therefore be to extract substantially more performance from a small sensor rather than simply making the entire camera larger.
Video Should Become More Modern
The SX740 HS introduced 4K video to the PowerShot SX line. Canon described this as a first for the series when the camera launched in 2018.
A future model should obviously move beyond that baseline.
But again, video should support the SX identity rather than overwhelm it.
Improved 4K recording, better autofocus during video, stabilisation, microphone support and modern connectivity would all be useful.
The ability to record distant wildlife, aircraft or maritime activity at extreme focal lengths could actually be one of the camera's strongest video applications.
The camera does not need to become a dedicated vlogging device.
It needs to become a better long-range visual recorder.
Connectivity Is Part of the Modern Compact Experience
A new SX should also reflect the expectations of contemporary compact-camera users.
Images should move easily from camera to smartphone.
Remote control should be straightforward.
Geotagging and wireless transfer should be reliable.
USB-C would be a sensible modernisation.
The objective is simple: the camera should provide the optical capability of a dedicated camera without imposing the workflow complexity of an older digital compact.
Canon's renewed focus on compact cameras is partly driven by a new generation of users who use smartphones alongside dedicated cameras rather than replacing one with the other.
The SX80 HS could fit naturally into that ecosystem.
The SX80 HS Could Have a Surprisingly Broad Use Case
This is where the concept becomes particularly interesting.
The camera would not have to be marketed exclusively as a wildlife camera.
Its long-range capability could make it useful for:
Wildlife photography. Distant animals and birds become accessible without a large telephoto system.
Bird photography. The extreme reach is particularly attractive for casual bird observation and documentation.
Aviation photography. Aircraft approaching or departing at distance are natural subjects.
Maritime photography. Ships offshore can be photographed without carrying a professional telephoto lens.
Travel photography. Architecture, landscapes and distant details can all benefit from the zoom range.
Moon photography. A 960mm-equivalent lens provides an accessible introduction to lunar photography.
Family and events. The camera can cover wide scenes and distant subjects without changing lenses.
This is not a narrow product.
Its versatility comes from the lens.
What Would Make an SX80 HS Worth Buying?
This is ultimately the most important question.
Canon does not need to produce an SX80 HS simply because the SX70/SX740 generation has become old.
A new model needs a compelling reason to exist.
For me, that would be a combination of:
A substantially improved sensor and image processor.
Modern Canon autofocus and subject recognition.
Much more effective stabilisation.
A useful electronic viewfinder.
A refined 24–960mm-class optical system.
Improved low-light performance.
Computational image-quality improvements.
Modern video.
USB-C and improved wireless connectivity.
And, critically, a genuinely compact body.
The product should feel like a modern reinvention of the superzoom rather than a specification update to an eight-year-old concept.
There May Never Be an SX80 HS
This possibility should remain part of the story.
Canon's current compact strategy is clearly evolving. The company has expanded production to meet renewed demand, introduced the PowerShot V1, continues to sell the G7 X Mark III and SX740 HS, and has explicitly said it wants future compact cameras to offer new value. Canon's 2026 Integrated Report identifies compact cameras as an area of renewed market attention.
But none of that guarantees an SX80 HS.
Canon may decide that the traditional small-sensor superzoom is no longer the best expression of the PowerShot brand.
It may instead develop a different compact category.
It may modernise another PowerShot line first.
Or it may decide that the existing SX740 HS continues to satisfy a sufficiently large market without requiring a successor.
There is also evidence that the SX740 HS remains remarkably popular despite its age. Recent market reporting has highlighted strong demand for the eight-year-old model, particularly because of its pocketable size and 40x optical zoom.
That is perhaps the most interesting evidence of all.
The technology may be old.
The use case is not.
The Future of the Superzoom
The SX80 HS therefore represents more than a possible Canon product number.
It represents a question about what a compact camera can still offer in a smartphone-dominated world.
The answer is not necessarily a larger sensor.
It is not necessarily more megapixels.
It is not even necessarily a longer zoom.
The answer may simply be access.
Access to distant wildlife.
Access to aircraft.
Access to ships.
Access to birds.
Access to the Moon.
Access to details that the photographer could not realistically reach with a phone.
That is the enduring strength of the PowerShot SX concept.
If Canon ever revives it, the SX80 HS should not attempt to compete with an EOS R camera.
It should do something an EOS R camera cannot do as conveniently:
put an extraordinary amount of optical reach into a camera small enough to take almost anywhere.
There may never be a PowerShot SX80 HS.
But there is still a very good reason to imagine one.
Because sometimes the future of a camera is not determined by whether the manufacturer has announced it.
It is determined by whether the photographic problem it could solve still exists.
And distant subjects are not going away.
The SX80 HS may never arrive. The need for reach remains.
