What Would Really Make It Worth the Upgrade?

The Canon EOS R5 Mark III is already attracting considerable attention, even though Canon has not officially announced such a camera. My earlier article, Canon EOS R5 Mark III Rumors | Release Date and Future Specifications, has consequently become the most-read of my current Canon camera articles.

That raises a more interesting question than simply asking what specifications the next R5 might have:

If Canon eventually introduces an EOS R5 Mark III, what would actually make it worth upgrading from the EOS R5 Mark II?

This is an important distinction.

The EOS R5 Mark II is not a camera waiting to be completed. It is already a highly capable professional hybrid camera, combining a 45-megapixel full-frame stacked sensor with continuous shooting of up to 30 frames per second, 8K 60p RAW video, Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, Eye Control AF, deep-learning noise reduction and in-camera upscaling.

Consequently, a future R5 Mark III would face a much more difficult challenge than simply being "better".

It would need to provide improvements that photographers could actually experience in the field.

The R5 Mark II Sets a High Standard

Canon's R5 series has always occupied an interesting position within the EOS R system.

It combines high resolution with high-speed operation and substantial video capability. The original R5 established this formula in 2020, while the R5 Mark II moved the concept forward with a stacked sensor, faster processing, improved autofocus and improved thermal performance.

The Mark II therefore already addresses many of the traditional reasons for upgrading a camera.

It is fast.

It is high resolution.

It has sophisticated subject recognition.

It can shoot substantial quantities of high-resolution imagery.

It is a serious video camera.

And it is capable of handling demanding subjects such as wildlife, birds in flight, sport, weddings and commercial photography.

This means that the R5 Mark III cannot simply offer incremental improvements everywhere and automatically become an essential upgrade.

For an existing R5 Mark II owner, the more useful question becomes:

What photographic problem does the Mark III solve better?

That is the standard against which I would judge it.

Canon EOS R5 Mark III Future Use Case Analysis

More Megapixels Would Not Necessarily Be Enough

One of the recurring expectations surrounding a future R5 Mark III is an increase in sensor resolution, potentially into the 50-60 megapixel range.

That would certainly provide greater cropping flexibility.

However, additional megapixels alone would not necessarily represent a major practical improvement for every R5 Mark II photographer.

The Mark II's 45MP files already provide substantial resolution for professional photography. For landscape, architecture, studio and many commercial applications, the difference between 45MP and something around 60MP may be useful without being transformational.

The real question would therefore be what happens alongside the resolution increase.

If Canon could combine higher resolution with improved dynamic range, lower read noise, better high-ISO performance and faster sensor readout, the upgrade argument would become considerably stronger.

In other words, I would be much more interested in a future sensor that is better, rather than merely larger in terms of pixel count.

Sensor Readout Could Be More Important Than Resolution

This may become one of the most significant areas of development.

The R5 Mark II's stacked sensor already represents a major advance over conventional sensor architectures. Faster readout enables high-speed electronic-shutter shooting while reducing the distortions associated with rolling shutter.

A future R5 Mark III could potentially push this much further.

For a landscape photographer, the improvement might be relatively unimportant.

For a photographer photographing a fast-moving bird, however, it could be extremely significant.

Birds in flight are particularly unforgiving subjects. Wing movement, rapid changes of direction and fast panning can expose limitations in sensor readout even when autofocus is working correctly.

A substantially faster sensor could therefore produce a more meaningful improvement than another 10 or 15 megapixels.

This illustrates an important principle when considering the R5 Mark III:

The best upgrade is not necessarily the specification that looks most impressive on paper. It is the improvement that changes what the photographer can successfully capture.

Autofocus: From Intelligent to More Predictive

Autofocus is another area where Canon would have a difficult but important opportunity.

The R5 Mark II already incorporates Dual Pixel Intelligent AF and sophisticated subject tracking. Canon specifically describes its ability to track moving subjects even when they are temporarily obscured.

Therefore, simply adding another "AI autofocus" label would mean very little.

What would matter is whether the system becomes more predictive.

Can it anticipate the movement of an erratically flying bird more effectively?

Can it maintain focus when the subject changes direction?

Can it recover more quickly when the subject briefly leaves the AF area?

Can it distinguish the intended subject from branches, reeds, other birds or background detail more reliably?

These are the improvements that could produce a genuine increase in the photographer's keeper rate.

For wildlife and sports photographers, that could be a much stronger reason to upgrade than increased resolution.

The question I would therefore ask of a future R5 Mark III is not:

"Does it have better AI?"

It is:

"Does it help me get more photographs that I could not reliably get with the R5 Mark II?"

That is a much higher standard.

Speed Is About More Than Frames Per Second

Another specification that inevitably attracts attention is continuous shooting speed.

But the R5 Mark II already reaches up to 30 frames per second electronically.

There is therefore limited value in simply increasing the headline number.

The more interesting questions concern what happens during a sustained sequence.

How large is the effective buffer?

How quickly can images be written to the card?

How long can the camera maintain its highest performance?

How quickly does it recover after a demanding burst?

How consistently does autofocus operate throughout a long sequence?

For birds in flight, these details may matter more than whether the camera can capture 30, 35 or 40 frames per second.

A future R5 Mark III could therefore make a compelling upgrade case through sustained performance, rather than simply a higher maximum frame rate.

Computational Photography May Become Increasingly Important

Perhaps the most interesting long-term development is not sensor resolution or frame rate at all.

It is computational photography.

The R5 Mark II already demonstrates Canon's movement in this direction, with deep-learning noise reduction and in-camera upscaling of photographs. Canon also provides sophisticated connectivity and workflow features.

The R5 Mark III could potentially extend this philosophy considerably further.

A future camera might use substantially greater processing power to improve noise reduction, subject recognition, detail reconstruction and image optimisation.

This is where the distinction between a traditional camera upgrade and a computational camera upgrade becomes interesting.

Historically, photographers largely thought about cameras in terms of:

sensor + processor + lens + photographer.

Increasingly, there is another layer:

sensor + processor + computational algorithms + lens + photographer.

That could become one of the most significant differences between the R5 Mark II and whatever eventually follows it.

Video: The Mark III Will Need More Than 8K

Video is another area in which Canon will have to move carefully.

The R5 Mark II already offers internal 8K recording at up to 60p RAW.

Consequently, simply announcing "8K" again would not represent a meaningful generational improvement.

For hybrid photographers and filmmakers, the more important developments could involve sustained recording performance, thermal management, readout speed, codecs, workflow efficiency and image quality.

Again, the principle is the same:

A specification is only valuable if it changes the way the camera can be used.

A future R5 Mark III that could sustain demanding high-resolution video for longer, while reducing heat-related limitations and improving workflow, could be significantly more useful than one that merely adds another headline video mode.

The Electronic Viewfinder and Shooting Experience Matter Too

There is a tendency to concentrate on the sensor and processor when discussing a new camera.

But the photographer interacts with the camera through the viewfinder, screen, controls and physical interface.

A future R5 Mark III could therefore offer meaningful improvements through a better electronic viewfinder, faster refresh, improved visibility in difficult light, a more responsive rear display or refinements to camera controls.

These improvements may appear minor in a specification sheet.

They are not necessarily minor in practice.

A camera is an instrument.

The less friction there is between seeing a potential photograph and making the exposure, the more effective that instrument becomes.

This is particularly important for professional photographers who may spend many hours working with the camera.

Which R5 Mark II Photographers Would Have the Strongest Reason to Upgrade?

If the R5 Mark III eventually delivers substantial improvements in sensor readout, autofocus prediction, sustained burst performance and computational processing, I believe wildlife and action photographers could be among its strongest potential customers.

Birds-in-flight photography is an obvious example.

The combination of unpredictable subject movement, demanding autofocus, rapid bursts and the need to crop heavily can expose the differences between generations of camera technology.

A photographer working with birds may benefit simultaneously from better AF prediction, faster sensor readout, improved buffer management and greater resolution.

Sports photographers could experience similar benefits.

Professional hybrid photographers may also have strong reasons to upgrade if the Mark III substantially improves both stills and video performance.

Commercial and studio photographers, on the other hand, might find the case less compelling unless Canon produces a significant improvement in image quality, dynamic range or computational processing.

Who Might Not Need to Upgrade?

This is equally important.

The arrival of an R5 Mark III would not make the R5 Mark II obsolete.

For many photographers, the Mark II may remain more than capable of satisfying their requirements for years.

A photographer whose work is primarily landscape, travel, portraiture or general-purpose photography may find that the existing 45MP sensor already provides more than enough resolution.

If their autofocus performance is already satisfactory, their burst requirements are modest and they do not depend heavily on the latest video capabilities, the practical benefit of moving to a new generation could be relatively small.

This is why I would be cautious about treating the Mark III as an automatic upgrade.

The R5 Mark II is already a highly sophisticated camera.

The decision should be based on need, rather than simply on technological curiosity.

The Real Upgrade Question

There is a broader lesson here.

Camera manufacturers naturally communicate through specifications.

Photographers, however, experience cameras through photographs.

The specification may say that a new camera has more megapixels.

The photographer wants to know whether those extra pixels produce a better photograph.

The specification may say that autofocus has become more intelligent.

The photographer wants to know whether more frames are actually in focus.

The specification may say that the camera shoots faster.

The photographer wants to know whether the camera can sustain that performance when the decisive moment arrives.

This is why I believe the most important R5 Mark III comparison will eventually be less about specifications and more about photographic consequences.

Should an R5 Mark II Owner Upgrade?

At this stage, there is no reason for an R5 Mark II owner to feel that an upgrade is necessary.

The R5 Mark III has not been officially announced by Canon, and current information remains speculative. Reports about its possible specifications and timing vary considerably.

Indeed, some current industry commentary considers a near-term R5 Mark III unlikely, given the relatively short interval since the R5 Mark II was introduced.

That makes the R5 Mark II a relatively safe camera to own.

If Canon eventually introduces an R5 Mark III, however, the question will become much more interesting.

I would look particularly closely at five areas:

sensor readout, autofocus prediction, sustained performance, computational imaging and real-world image quality.

If Canon can make substantial advances in these areas simultaneously, the Mark III could represent a meaningful generational step.

If the changes amount primarily to higher resolution, slightly faster performance and incremental refinements, many R5 Mark II owners may have little reason to move.

The Best Reason to Upgrade

Ultimately, I would reduce the entire R5 Mark III upgrade question to one sentence:

Upgrade because the new camera solves a photographic problem—not because the model number has increased.

That principle applies to every generation of camera.

The EOS R5 Mark II is already capable of producing exceptional photographs. Its successor will therefore have to offer more than a collection of impressive specifications.

It will have to provide something that the photographer can actually see, feel and use.

Perhaps that will be substantially better autofocus.

Perhaps dramatically faster sensor readout.

Perhaps improved dynamic range.

Perhaps computational photography that genuinely extends what can be achieved with a full-frame camera.

Perhaps it will be a combination of all of these.

Until Canon officially reveals the camera, we simply do not know.

But that uncertainty does not prevent us from asking the more useful question.

What would the EOS R5 Mark III need to do differently for an R5 Mark II owner to say: "Yes — now I have a reason to upgrade"?

That, rather than the rumour of another specification increase, is the question worth watching.
