Introduced in 2016 as the successor to the highly successful EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, the Mark II was redesigned optically and mechanically for contemporary high-resolution EOS cameras. Its 24–105mm range covers everything from moderately wide-angle landscape work to short-telephoto subject isolation, while the constant f/4 aperture maintains consistent exposure throughout the zoom range.

For a photographer who values the ability to move between photographic situations without repeatedly changing lenses, this makes the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM an unusually practical piece of equipment. It is not a specialist lens. Its strength lies precisely in its ability to become a general-purpose photographic platform.

The Core Use Case: General-Purpose Full-Frame Photography

The fundamental proposition is simple: 24–105mm on full frame is an exceptionally broad working range.

At 24mm, the lens provides a substantial 84° diagonal angle of view, suitable for landscapes, architecture, environmental portraits, interiors and establishing views. At 35mm and 50mm, it enters classic documentary and standard focal-length territory. At 85mm and 105mm, it becomes increasingly useful for portraits, details and compressed perspectives. Canon specifies a 24–105mm focal range, constant f/4 maximum aperture, 0.45m minimum focusing distance and approximately 795g weight.

This makes it particularly effective for walk-around photography. A photographer can begin at 24mm to establish a scene, move towards 50mm for a more natural perspective, and then use 105mm to isolate a detail without changing position or lens.

That operational flexibility is more important than it may initially appear. In documentary photography, travel, street photography and fieldwork, the decisive moment can disappear while a photographer changes lenses.

Landscape and Environmental Photography

Landscape photography is one of the lens's strongest applications.

At 24mm, it is sufficiently wide for conventional landscapes without moving into the extreme perspective effects associated with ultra-wide lenses. Importantly, the photographer can then zoom towards 50–70mm or 105mm to isolate layers, distant features, architectural details or landscape elements.

This creates two quite different compositional strategies within one lens. At the wide end, foreground and environment can be emphasised. At the long end, spatial compression can be used to bring distant elements visually closer together. Independent testing has identified landscape photography as a particularly strong application of this focal-length range.

For field-based photography, therefore, the lens can function as a single-lens landscape system.

Its Image Stabilizer is also significant. Canon rates the optical IS system at up to four stops of shake correction, although actual results depend upon focal length, shooting technique and subject movement. IS is particularly valuable when photographing static subjects in subdued light. It does not, however, freeze moving subjects; shutter speed remains the controlling variable for subject motion.

Street, Documentary and Maritime Photography

The lens therefore has considerable utility for documenting vessels, harbours, waterfront infrastructure and associated human activity. It will not replace a telephoto lens when a vessel is distant, but that is not its role. Its value is in documenting the context surrounding the vessel.

Canon itself highlighted street photography when demonstrating the Mark II, noting its versatility when moving through different locations and its ability to render detail on high-resolution cameras.

Portraiture

The 85–105mm portion of the zoom is particularly useful for portraits.

At 85mm and 105mm, perspective becomes more flattering than at 24mm, while f/4 can provide useful subject-background separation. The ten-blade circular diaphragm also contributes to smoother out-of-focus rendering.

However, the lens should not be confused with an 85mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.4 or 70-200mm f/2.8 in this respect. Its f/4 aperture sacrifices approximately two stops of light compared with an f/2 lens and therefore produces less dramatic background separation.

Its portrait advantage is instead framing flexibility: the photographer can move from an environmental portrait at 35mm to a tighter head-and-shoulders composition at 105mm without changing lenses.

Travel and Fieldwork

Perhaps the strongest argument for the lens is travel.

A photographer carrying the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM can cover architecture, landscapes, people, street scenes, environmental details and moderate-distance subjects with one lens. That substantially reduces the need to carry several primes or multiple zooms.

The trade-off is weight. At approximately 795g, this is a substantial lens rather than an ultralight travel zoom. Nevertheless, its range can reduce system weight by replacing several lenses, even if the lens itself is relatively heavy.

Its L-series construction, weather-resistant design and fluorine coatings also make it more appropriate for serious field use than many consumer-oriented standard zooms. Canon additionally incorporated Air Sphere Coating to reduce flare and ghosting.

Optical Performance

The Mark II represents a meaningful refinement of the original 24-105mm design.

Independent testing generally finds very good central sharpness, particularly through the short and middle portions of the zoom range. Performance towards the edges is strongest when the lens is stopped down, with f/5.6–f/8 often representing a useful working range for maximising overall image quality.

The long end is somewhat more complicated. At 105mm, wide-open performance is good, but some tests report a reduction in sharpness compared with the shorter focal lengths. Stopping down improves performance.

This should not be interpreted as a fundamental weakness. The lens is designed as an all-round professional zoom, not a laboratory-optimised prime. In real photographic use, its optical performance is more than adequate for landscapes, documentary work, travel, portraits and general field photography.

The Mark II also improves distortion and chromatic-aberration control compared with its predecessor, while the Air Sphere Coating substantially improves resistance to flare and ghosting.

The f/4 Limitation

The most important limitation is also obvious: f/4.

For daylight photography, this is rarely problematic. For low-light work, action photography, wildlife and situations requiring extremely shallow depth of field, however, a faster lens becomes advantageous.

Compared with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L family, the 24-105mm sacrifices one stop of aperture while gaining 35mm of telephoto reach. That is an important design trade-off.

Consequently, the 24-105mm is better understood as a versatility-first lens, whereas the 24-70mm f/2.8 is more strongly oriented towards low-light performance, subject isolation and professional event photography.

On APS-C Cameras

The lens can also be used on Canon APS-C EOS bodies, although its field of view changes substantially.

The effective field of view becomes approximately equivalent to 38–168mm on Canon's 1.6× APS-C format. This eliminates the genuinely wide-angle capability of 24mm but produces a useful short-telephoto-to-telephoto range.

That makes it potentially interesting for portraits, details, compressed landscapes and certain forms of observational photography, although it is less suitable as a general-purpose APS-C walk-around lens.
