In 2026, Canon's PowerShot digital camera system reaches an important historical milestone: 30 years since the introduction of the original PowerShot 600. Launched in July 1996, the PowerShot 600 was Canon's first consumer-oriented compact digital camera and marked the beginning of a product lineage that would eventually encompass the PowerShot G, S, A, SX, N, V and other series. The camera's specifications appear modest by contemporary standards. Its 1/3-inch CCD contained 570,000 pixels, its fixed 7mm f/2.5 lens provided the equivalent field of view of a 50mm lens, and its highest recorded image size was 832 × 608 pixels. There was no rear LCD screen. Storage consisted of 1MB of internal flash memory, with additional recording possible using PCMCIA Type II or III cards. The PowerShot 600 emerged during a period of profound technological uncertainty.

Photography had been dominated by film for more than a century. Photographers understood a relatively stable workflow: expose film in the camera, remove the film after shooting, process it chemically and then produce prints, transparencies or negatives. Digital photography fundamentally disrupted that sequence.

Canon had already been investigating electronic imaging before the arrival of the PowerShot 600. The company's Camera Museum history describes the transition from its earlier still-video camera development towards digital imaging during the early 1990s. Canon also worked with Eastman Kodak on the professional EOS DCS series, introduced in 1995. The PowerShot 600 followed in July 1996 as a camera aimed at general users. This distinction is important. The PowerShot 600 was not literally Canon's first experience with digital imaging. Rather, it was the camera through which Canon began bringing digital photography into a consumer compact-camera context.

That was a much more consequential development.

Professional digital imaging could be justified by specialised applications where the cost of equipment could be absorbed by professional workflows. A consumer camera faced a different challenge. It had to make a technology that was unfamiliar, expensive and technically constrained understandable and useful to ordinary photographers.

The PowerShot 600 was an early answer to that problem.

A Camera Built Around a Different Photographic Workflow

One of the most revealing aspects of the PowerShot 600 is that its architecture already reflects the fundamental difference between film and digital photography.

The camera used a 570,000-pixel CCD sensor with an ISO-equivalent sensitivity of 100. Its lens was a fixed 7mm f/2.5 design, equivalent to approximately 50mm on a 35mm film camera. There was, however, no LCD monitor.

This immediately separates the PowerShot 600 from the compact digital cameras that would follow it. Modern photographers have become accustomed to composing, reviewing and evaluating images on a rear display. In 1996, the PowerShot 600's digital image was effectively invisible until the photographer transferred it to another device.

That limitation is historically significant.

The camera was therefore not simply a conventional film camera with a digital sensor substituted for film. It represented an emerging system in which the camera and computer were becoming interconnected components of the photographic process.

The photograph no longer necessarily ended with the camera.

It continued into the computer.

The Importance of Digital Storage

The PowerShot 600 also demonstrates just how radically digital storage has changed.

The camera contained only 1MB of internal flash memory. At the highest 832 × 608 resolution, Canon's specifications indicate capacity for only four images in Fine mode, although greater numbers could be stored at lower quality or resolution settings. Today, a photographer may routinely carry thousands of high-resolution RAW files on a memory card. In 1996, four full-resolution images could consume the entire internal memory of a camera.

This limitation changed the photographer's relationship with the image.

Digital photography promised freedom from the finite number of exposures contained on a roll of film, but early digital cameras replaced one limitation with another: memory capacity, transfer time and storage cost.

The PowerShot 600 therefore belongs to a transitional period. It offered the conceptual freedom of digital photography while operating within the severe technological constraints of early semiconductor memory.

That tension is one of the most interesting aspects of the camera.

RAW Photography Before the Modern RAW Workflow

Perhaps one of the most remarkable characteristics of the PowerShot 600 is its support for a proprietary CCD RAW mode.

The presence of RAW in such an early consumer digital camera is particularly interesting when viewed from today's perspective.

Modern RAW photography is normally associated with advanced interchangeable-lens cameras and enthusiast-oriented compact cameras. Photographers use RAW files because they retain substantial image data for subsequent processing.

The PowerShot 600 demonstrates that the underlying principle is considerably older.

The technology, file formats, processing environment and practical workflow were very different from today's RAW ecosystem, but Canon was already providing a way to preserve image information in a less processed form.

This reinforces an important point about camera development: many technologies that appear modern are actually the result of decades of refinement rather than sudden invention.

The Computer Becomes Part of the Camera System

The PowerShot 600 also reveals another major transition: the computer was becoming part of the photographic system.

This is profoundly important when considered from the perspective of contemporary photography.

Today, photographers routinely regard camera, smartphone, computer, cloud storage, image-management software and social-media platforms as parts of a connected imaging ecosystem.

In 1996, that ecosystem was only beginning to emerge.

The PowerShot 600 effectively introduced the idea that the photographic workflow could extend beyond the physical camera. Capture was becoming the first stage of a digital chain rather than the beginning and end of the photographic process.

This would eventually become one of the defining characteristics of digital photography.

The PowerShot Concept Begins to Take Shape

It is tempting to view the PowerShot 600 simply as a technological ancestor of later Canon compact cameras. A more useful interpretation is that it established the beginning of a design philosophy.

Canon's later PowerShot cameras would become increasingly diverse.

Some would emphasise portability. Others would prioritise optical zoom. The G-series would develop into sophisticated enthusiast-oriented compact cameras, while the SX series would become associated with extreme optical zoom ranges. Later models would introduce increasingly capable sensors, image processors, optical image stabilisation, sophisticated autofocus and advanced video functions.

Yet the underlying idea remained recognisable:

put substantial photographic capability into a relatively compact camera.

The PowerShot 600 was the earliest expression of that concept.

Its technology was primitive by modern standards, but the architectural direction was already visible.

From PowerShot 600 to the G-Series

The subsequent development of the PowerShot family makes the significance of the original model even clearer.

The G1 in particular illustrates how quickly Canon could evolve the compact digital-camera concept.

The PowerShot 600 had a fixed 50mm-equivalent lens, no LCD and less than one megapixel of image data. Later PowerShot cameras would offer optical zooms, articulated displays, increasingly sophisticated exposure controls, RAW workflows and substantially greater sensor resolution.

The progression was not simply a matter of adding megapixels.

Canon was learning how to integrate optical design, sensor technology, digital processing, user interface design, storage and computer connectivity into increasingly coherent photographic systems.

That is precisely why the PowerShot 600 deserves attention from anyone interested in Canon camera architecture.

From the PowerShot 600 to the Modern G3 X

The evolution becomes particularly striking when the original PowerShot is considered alongside a modern camera such as the PowerShot G3 X.

The G3 X belongs to an entirely different technological generation. Its long-range optical zoom, electronic imaging architecture, RAW capability, advanced image processing and sophisticated exposure system place it firmly within the mature phase of Canon's compact-camera development.

Yet both cameras share a fundamental proposition.

Neither requires the photographer to carry an interchangeable-lens camera system in order to access a broad range of photographic possibilities.

The difference is the enormous technological distance travelled between them.

The PowerShot 600's fixed 50mm-equivalent lens contrasts dramatically with the G3 X's exceptionally broad focal-length range. The original camera's 570,000-pixel CCD seems almost impossibly modest beside contemporary sensors. The four-image maximum at its highest internal-memory setting contrasts with today's capacity for hundreds or thousands of photographs.

But the basic purpose remains familiar:

capture a photograph in a compact camera and make that image part of a digital workflow.

This continuity is perhaps more significant than the differences.

Why the PowerShot 600 Matters in 2026

The timing of this historical examination is particularly appropriate.

Canon has officially recognised 2026 as the 30th anniversary of PowerShot. The company notes that the lineup has expanded enormously since the PowerShot 600, with more than 200 PowerShot models released in the Americas by February 2026. That makes the original PowerShot 600 more than a historical curiosity.

It was the first step in a remarkably extensive consumer digital-camera story.

The modern renewed interest in older compact cameras makes this history even more relevant. Photographers are increasingly looking beyond the specification race and reconsidering what smaller cameras offer in terms of portability, simplicity, creative limitation and photographic engagement.

The PowerShot 600 offers an extreme historical example of that principle.

Its limitations were not merely technical deficiencies. They shaped the photographer's relationship with the camera.

The Lesson of the PowerShot 600

The most valuable way to understand the PowerShot 600 is therefore not to ask whether it could compete with a contemporary camera.

It could not.

Nor should its image quality, storage capacity or operational interface be evaluated using 2026 expectations.

The more important question is what Canon was trying to accomplish.

The answer was ambitious: to move digital imaging from a specialist technological domain towards the ordinary photographic consumer.

The PowerShot 600 represented an early attempt to make electronic image capture practical, portable and understandable.

It introduced a new relationship between camera and computer. It demonstrated that digital images could be stored electronically, transferred to a computer and incorporated into a new kind of photographic workflow. It also demonstrated that Canon was prepared to develop the compact camera as something more than a simplified film camera.

The subsequent 30 years of PowerShot development demonstrate how successful that direction became.

Conclusion

The Canon PowerShot 600 occupies a small but important place in photographic history.

It was introduced in July 1996 at a time when film photography remained dominant and digital imaging was still technologically immature. In an era of computational photography, AI-assisted imaging, enormous memory capacities and highly sophisticated mirrorless cameras, the PowerShot 600 reminds us that the digital camera revolution did not begin with today's technology.

It began when manufacturers and photographers first started imagining the photograph not as something recorded onto film, but as information that could be captured, stored, transferred and transformed.

The PowerShot 600 was one of Canon's first practical answers to that new photographic world.

Thirty years later, its historical importance is considerably greater than its specifications might suggest.
