Photographers understandably want to know which shutter speed to use, which autofocus configuration to select and which lens will provide sufficient reach. These are important considerations, but they represent only one part of the preparation required for successful BIF photography.

A camera can be configured very effectively and still produce a disappointing sequence if the photographer cannot anticipate the bird, acquire the subject, maintain the AF area over it or recognise how the environment is influencing the opportunity.

Effective BIF photography is therefore better understood as an interaction between camera configuration, lens handling, photographer behaviour and environmental intelligence.

The preparation for a recent practical session using the Canon EOS 7D Mark II provided an opportunity to examine this relationship. The camera was paired with a telephoto lens in the general 300–500mm focal-length range, providing a useful basis for developing practical BIF technique without making any single lens specification the objective.

The purpose was not to find a magical set of settings. It was to establish a reliable technical baseline that would allow the photographer to concentrate on observing, anticipating and responding to the bird.

1. Establishing a Reliable Technical Baseline

The first stage of preparation was deliberately straightforward.

The recommended starting configuration was:

  • Exposure Mode: Manual (M)

  • Shutter Speed: 1/2500–1/3200 s

  • Aperture: Largest available aperture

  • ISO: Auto ISO

  • AF Operation: AI Servo AF

  • AF Area: Large Zone AF

  • AI Servo parameters: Canon default settings

  • Drive: High-speed continuous shooting

This configuration is not presented as an absolute prescription for every BIF situation. Rather, it establishes a known starting point from which practical decisions can be made.

The fast shutter speed is given priority because subject and wing movement can rapidly destroy detail. Maximum aperture provides the greatest available light and helps separate the bird from its background, while Auto ISO allows the camera to accommodate changing illumination without requiring constant exposure adjustment from the photographer.

This is an important distinction.

The photographer is not simply allowing the camera to determine the exposure. The photographer is deliberately controlling the variables most closely related to motion rendition and available light, while allowing ISO to respond to environmental variation.

The result is a technically predictable platform from which to learn.

2. Autofocus: Simplicity Before Customisation

Autofocus is central to BIF photography, but the temptation to customise every available AF parameter can create unnecessary complexity.

For the practical session, AI Servo AF was selected for continuous subject tracking, with Large Zone AF used as the preferred AF area.

This provides a useful compromise between precision and acquisition.

A single AF point can provide excellent precision but demands considerable subject-placement accuracy. Conversely, fully automatic AF-area selection gives the camera considerably more responsibility for deciding which subject to prioritise.

Large Zone AF occupies a useful middle position.

The photographer remains responsible for placing the AF zone over the bird, while the camera has a larger area within which to maintain focus.

The three principal AI Servo parameters—Tracking Sensitivity, Acceleration/Deceleration Tracking and AF Point Auto Switching—were left at their Canon default values.

This was deliberate.

For a photographer developing BIF competence, there is considerable educational value in first learning what the camera does with a stable, uncomplicated configuration. If a problem subsequently emerges that can reasonably be attributed to an AF parameter, that parameter can be explored and changed deliberately.

The principle is simple:

Do not customise the camera to solve a problem that is actually caused by photographer behaviour.

3. The Photographer Remains Part of the Autofocus System

Modern autofocus systems are remarkably capable, but autofocus does not eliminate the photographer's responsibility.

The first challenge is acquisition.

The bird must be brought into the viewfinder and into the AF area quickly enough for the system to acquire it. Once acquired, the photographer must maintain the AF area over the moving subject.

This makes physical technique inseparable from autofocus performance.

The photographer needs to develop the ability to:

  • anticipate the bird's movement;
  • acquire it decisively;
  • establish focus;
  • maintain the AF zone over the subject;
  • pan smoothly;
  • continue tracking during the burst;
  • and maintain attention on the bird rather than becoming distracted by camera controls.

The camera and photographer therefore operate as a system.

A highly sophisticated AF configuration cannot compensate indefinitely for poor acquisition or unstable tracking.

4. Environmental Intelligence

The most important preparation may occur before the camera is raised.

Environmental Intelligence is the photographer's ability to read the circumstances surrounding the photographic opportunity and anticipate what is likely to happen next.

For BIF photography, this includes:

Light
Where is the light coming from? Is it changing? Will the bird enter a brighter or darker area?

Background
Will the background support reliable AF acquisition, or is there vegetation, sky variation or another competing subject?

Flight direction
Is the bird approaching, crossing the frame, moving away or likely to change direction?

Bird behaviour
Is it soaring, gliding, hovering, banking, accelerating or preparing to land?

Distance
How far away is the bird, and how quickly is that distance changing?

Photographer position
Would moving position improve the light, background or angle of flight?

Focal length
Is the selected focal length providing useful reach while still allowing reliable acquisition and framing?

These observations influence the photograph before any exposure is made.

This is why anticipation is often more valuable than reaction.

The photographer who recognises where the bird is likely to go has already gained an advantage over the photographer who waits for the bird to arrive and then attempts to react.

5. Lens Handling and the 300–600mm Working Range

300–600mm telephoto lens options provides substantial reach for BIF photography, but reach is not the only consideration.

The longer the focal length, the more demanding subject acquisition and framing can become.

At 500 - 600mm, a relatively close or rapidly moving bird may be difficult to acquire and maintain within the frame. At 300mm or 400mm, the photographer may have a wider field of view that makes acquisition easier, with the possibility of cropping later.

The important principle is therefore not:

Always use the longest focal length available.

It is:

Use the focal length that gives you the best opportunity to acquire, track and successfully frame the bird.

The photographer should also learn to support and control the lens naturally, using smooth movements rather than abrupt corrections.

The objective is not to eliminate all movement. It is to make camera movement predictable and controlled.

A successful BIF sequence often begins with an imperfect frame. The bird may initially be small within the viewfinder. What matters is that the photographer acquires it, establishes tracking and progressively improves the framing.

6. Photographer Behaviour Before Camera Adjustment

One of the most important principles in BIF training is to distinguish between a technical problem and a behavioural problem.

Suppose the photographer repeatedly loses the bird from the AF zone.

The immediate temptation might be to alter an AF parameter.

But the underlying problem could instead be:

  • poor initial acquisition;
  • excessive camera movement;
  • attempting to frame too tightly;
  • reacting too late;
  • unsuitable photographer position;
  • or remaining at too long a focal length.

Changing an AF setting in such circumstances may obscure the real lesson.

A more productive hierarchy is:

Photographer behaviour first.
Position and environment second.
Camera settings third.

This does not mean camera settings are unimportant. It means that they should be changed for a demonstrated reason.

7. The Practical Learning Cycle

BIF skills develop particularly effectively through a short cycle of observation and experimentation:

Attempt → Observe → Diagnose → One adjustment → Attempt again

The restriction to one adjustment at a time is important.

If shutter speed, AF configuration, focal length and tracking technique are all changed simultaneously, the photographer cannot know which change produced the improvement.

A controlled learning process produces much stronger understanding.

The objective is also not to make every frame successful.

BIF photography naturally produces unsuccessful frames. Even highly experienced photographers discard large numbers of images.

The important question is:

Why did this frame succeed or fail?

A missed frame can therefore be useful if the photographer can identify what happened.

8. Evaluating the Field Frame

A successful BIF image should first be judged as a field frame, before considering post-processing.

The key questions include:

  • Was the bird successfully acquired?
  • Is the important part of the subject sharp?
  • Is the wing position or gesture meaningful?
  • Is the framing usable?
  • Is there sufficient space around the bird?
  • Does the background support the subject?
  • Is the exposure technically usable?

This approach prevents the photographer from confusing a heavily processed image with a successful photograph.

A good field frame may require cropping or tonal adjustment. That is normal.

However:

Post-processing can refine a successful field frame; it cannot reliably manufacture one.

This distinction is particularly valuable when reviewing a sequence in Lightroom.

9. Lightroom as a Learning Environment

The Lightroom component of the practical is therefore not intended to teach post-processing technique.

Its primary purpose is awareness and evaluation.

The photographer can use the software to examine sequences and identify:

  • which frames were successfully acquired;

  • which frames maintained focus;

  • where timing succeeded;

  • where framing failed;

  • how the background influenced the result;

  • how much cropping may be required;

  • and which images have genuine photographic potential.

Only after this assessment does it become useful to consider basic post-processing fundamentals.

The central question remains:

Did I succeed in the field?

That question connects the computer-based review directly back to the field experience.

10. Professional Self-Analysis

A strong practical session should not simply conclude with the trainer saying what the photographer did correctly or incorrectly.

The photographer should also be able to analyse their own performance.

The review provides a structured opportunity to consider:

  • what was understood;
  • what was successfully applied;
  • what remained difficult;
  • what environmental factors were recognised;
  • what camera functions became clearer;
  • what the images reveal about technique;
  • and what should be practised next.

This turns the practical from a single event into part of an ongoing development process.

The learner is encouraged to return to the learner guide after the session, reinforce the relevant theory and compare it with the evidence contained in their own photographs.

11. From Settings to Competence

The ultimate objective of BIF training is therefore not memorisation of a particular shutter speed, AF area or camera configuration.

Those settings provide a foundation.

Competence develops when the photographer can combine that foundation with:

Observation
Seeing what is happening.

Anticipation
Predicting what is likely to happen next.

Positioning
Creating a favourable photographic opportunity.

Acquisition
Getting the bird into the AF area quickly.

Tracking
Maintaining the subject while allowing the camera to do its work.

Timing
Recognising when to initiate and maintain the sequence.

Evaluation
Understanding why the resulting frames succeeded or failed.

This is where Environmental Intelligence becomes central.

The camera is not operating independently of the photographer. The photographer's decisions establish the circumstances in which the camera has the best opportunity to succeed.

Conclusion

Preparation for Birds-in-Flight photography is therefore much broader than preparing a camera.

A reliable technical baseline reduces unnecessary complexity. Appropriate autofocus configuration gives the photographer a predictable platform. A suitable 300–500mm focal length provides useful reach while retaining practical acquisition and framing options.

But these elements only become effective when combined with informed photographer behaviour.

The developing BIF photographer needs to learn to read the environment, anticipate the bird, position intelligently, acquire decisively, track smoothly and evaluate honestly.

The most useful outcome of a practical session is consequently not simply a collection of good photographs.

It is the development of a photographer who increasingly understands why those photographs succeeded—and what to do differently when they did not.

That is the beginning of repeatable Birds-in-Flight competence.
