It does not compete directly with the faster RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM on aperture, construction or professional specification. Instead, its proposition is different: maximum everyday versatility in a compact, relatively lightweight and accessible full-frame zoom.

For travel, documentary photography, family photography, street photography and general-purpose EOS R photography, that proposition is compelling.

Canon introduced the lens in 2020 specifically as a compact and affordable standard zoom for the EOS R system. At approximately 395g and 88.8mm long, it is considerably easier to carry for extended periods than many professional alternatives. The 24-105mm Focal-Length Proposition

The principal strength of the lens is not any individual focal length. It is the continuity of perspective from 24mm to 105mm.

At 24mm, the photographer can work with landscapes, architecture, interiors, environmental portraits and relatively confined spaces. Moving towards 35-50mm produces more natural documentary perspectives, while 70-105mm becomes increasingly useful for portraits, details and subject isolation.

This makes the lens particularly effective when the photographer does not know what the next subject will be.

A walk through a city, for example, may involve architecture at 24mm, street photography around 35-50mm, a portrait at 85mm and a distant architectural detail at 105mm. None of these requires a lens change.

That is the fundamental use case: one lens providing a broad photographic vocabulary.

For the traveller using a full-frame EOS R body, this lens therefore represents an attractive compromise between coverage, portability and image quality.

It is particularly suited to photographers who want to explore rather than construct a specialist kit for every possible subject.

Documentary and Street Photography

The lens also has strong documentary credentials.

The 24-105mm range permits the photographer to change framing rapidly without physically changing position. At the wide end, the photographer can establish context; at the longer end, individual details can be isolated.

The STM focusing system is designed to provide smooth autofocus for both still photography and video, making the lens relevant to hybrid creators as well. (Canon)

The limitation is aperture.

At 105mm, the maximum aperture is only f/7.1. In low-light street photography, this can require higher ISO settings or slower shutter speeds. Consequently, photographers who routinely work in dim interiors or night-time environments may prefer a faster prime or professional zoom.

That is not a defect so much as the price of the lens's compact design.

Close-Up Photography

One of the more interesting characteristics of this lens is its close-focusing capability.

In autofocus, Canon specifies a maximum magnification of 0.4× at 105mm. In Center Focus Macro mode, manual focus can produce up to 0.5× magnification, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.13m at 24mm. (Canon)

This considerably expands its usefulness.

A traveller can photograph flowers, food, crafts, textures, small objects and architectural details without carrying a dedicated macro lens.

The result is not a replacement for a specialist macro lens, but it is a highly practical close-up capability built into a general-purpose zoom.

Image Stabilization

The lens incorporates optical Image Stabilization rated at up to five stops under CIPA testing conditions when used at 105mm on an EOS R camera. (Canon)

This is particularly valuable because the lens becomes progressively slower as it is zoomed.

Stabilization, however, must be understood correctly. It primarily compensates for camera movement, not subject movement. A stationary architectural subject may benefit substantially from a slower shutter speed, whereas a moving person or animal still requires an appropriate shutter speed.

This distinction becomes important when evaluating the lens for real-world photography rather than simply reading its specification sheet.

The Aperture Trade-Off

The biggest limitation is obvious from the name: F4-7.1.

At 24mm, f/4 is reasonably useful. At 105mm, f/7.1 is comparatively slow.

This affects three things:

  1. Low-light performance.

  2. Subject isolation.

  3. Autofocus conditions in very dim environments.

The lens is therefore not designed as a specialist portrait, sports or low-light lens.

Instead, it is a general-purpose daylight and well-supported-light lens.

On a modern full-frame EOS R camera, high-ISO capability and in-body stabilization can mitigate some of these limitations, but they cannot change the physical aperture.

Who Should Use It?

The RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM makes particular sense for photographers who value:

  • travel versatility;
  • low equipment weight;
  • one-lens walk-around photography;
  • landscapes and architecture;
  • street and documentary photography;
  • portraits in reasonable light;
  • close-up and detail photography;
  • occasional video;
  • an affordable entry into the RF full-frame system.

It is less appropriate for photographers whose priorities are professional weather sealing, constant wide apertures, extreme subject isolation, intensive low-light work or demanding action photography.

Final Assessment

The RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM should not be judged as a cheaper version of Canon's professional 24-105mm F4L.

It is better understood as a different design philosophy.

Its objective is to provide a remarkably broad range of everyday photographic applications in a 395g package. The combination of 24-105mm coverage, five-stop optical IS, STM autofocus, control-ring functionality and useful close-focus capability makes it unusually versatile for its class. (Canon)

For a photographer travelling with a full-frame EOS R camera, that versatility can be more valuable than a faster aperture that is rarely required.

My assessment is therefore straightforward:

The RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM is not Canon's specialist 24-105mm. It is Canon's lightweight full-frame "do-most-things" zoom—and that is precisely why it deserves serious consideration as a travel and everyday lens.
