A Practical Guide for Ship Spotters and Photographers

A ship photograph can record far more than the appearance of a vessel. It can become the starting point for identifying the ship, understanding its purpose, locating it within the maritime transport system and placing it within a much larger history of navigation and commerce.

For photographers and shipspotters, however, maritime information often comes with its own specialised vocabulary. Vessel records contain abbreviations such as IMO, AIS, MMSI, LOA, GT and DWT, while navigation and operational information introduces terms such as draught, beam, COG, SOG and ETA.

Understanding these terms changes the way a vessel is observed. The photograph remains the primary visual record, but maritime terminology provides a framework for interpreting what the camera has recorded.

This guide presents some of the most useful nautical terms and abbreviations encountered by photographers, shipspotters and maritime observers.

1. Vessel Identification

AIS — Automatic Identification System

AIS is an automated maritime communication system through which suitably equipped vessels transmit and receive information. Depending on the vessel and available data, this can include its identity, position, course, speed, heading and voyage information.

For ship spotters, AIS is particularly useful because it can connect a photograph with a specific vessel.

AIS information should nevertheless be treated as an aid to observation rather than an infallible photographic identification system. Equipment, transmission, reception, data quality and operating circumstances can all affect what is displayed.

IMO Number

The IMO number is a permanent seven-digit identification number assigned to an eligible vessel. Unlike a ship's name, which can change, the IMO number normally remains associated with the vessel throughout its operational life.

For maritime photography, it is one of the most valuable identifiers because it allows a vessel to be followed through name changes, ownership changes and different periods of service.

MMSI — Maritime Mobile Service Identity

An MMSI is a nine-digit identification number used in maritime radio communications and digital systems, including AIS.

Unlike an IMO number, the MMSI is associated with a vessel's maritime communications identity and can therefore change under certain circumstances.

Call Sign

A call sign is a unique alphanumeric identifier used in radio communications. Ships may have a call sign associated with their national registration and maritime communications.

Flag State

The flag state is the country under whose laws a vessel is registered and whose flag the vessel is entitled to fly.

The flag state has legal and regulatory responsibilities concerning vessels registered under its flag.

Port of Registry

The port of registry is the port entered in the vessel's registration documentation. It does not necessarily mean that the vessel operates primarily from that port.

This distinction is important when interpreting vessel photographs and AIS or database information.

2. Dimensions, Tonnage and Capacity

LOA — Length Overall

Length Overall is the maximum overall length of a vessel, measured from the foremost point of the bow to the aftermost point of the stern.

LOA is one of the most useful dimensions for understanding the physical scale of a ship.

Beam

Beam is the vessel's maximum width.

For photographers, beam can help provide visual scale when comparing a ship with harbour infrastructure, tugboats, people or other vessels.

Draught

Draught is the vertical distance between the waterline and the lowest part of the vessel's hull or underwater structure.

A ship's draught changes according to its loading condition, fuel, ballast and other operational factors.

Air Draft

Air draft is the vertical distance from the waterline to the highest fixed point of a vessel.

It is particularly important when ships pass beneath bridges, power lines or other overhead structures.

GT — Gross Tonnage

Gross Tonnage is a measure based on the enclosed volume of a vessel.

Despite the word "tonnage", GT is not a measure of weight. It is a dimensionless index calculated according to international rules.

NT — Net Tonnage

Net Tonnage is another volume-based measurement relating primarily to the vessel's earning or cargo-carrying spaces.

Like GT, NT should not be interpreted as a measurement of the ship's weight.

DWT — Deadweight Tonnage

Deadweight is the maximum weight a vessel can safely carry, including cargo, fuel, freshwater, provisions, passengers and crew, subject to its permitted loading condition.

DWT is therefore fundamentally different from GT and NT.

TEU — Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit

TEU is a standardised measure used primarily for container shipping.

One standard 20-foot container represents one TEU. A 40-foot container is generally counted as two TEU.

A vessel described as having a capacity of several thousand TEU is therefore being described in terms of container-carrying capacity.

3. Navigation and Movement

COG — Course Over Ground

COG describes the vessel's actual direction of movement over the Earth's surface.

It is not necessarily identical to the vessel's heading because wind, current and other factors can influence the vessel's movement.

SOG — Speed Over Ground

SOG is the vessel's actual speed relative to the ground.

It can differ from speed through the water because of currents.

Heading

Heading is the direction in which the vessel's bow is pointing.

A vessel's heading and COG can differ, particularly in conditions involving wind, current, manoeuvring or other external forces.

ETA — Estimated Time of Arrival

ETA is the expected time at which a vessel will arrive at a specified destination or waypoint.

ETD — Estimated Time of Departure

ETD is the expected departure time.

ATA — Actual Time of Arrival

ATA records the actual arrival time.

ATD — Actual Time of Departure

ATD records the actual departure time.

4. Basic Ship Anatomy

Bow

The bow is the forward end of a vessel.

Stern

The stern is the rear or after end of a vessel.

Port

Port is the left-hand side of a vessel when facing forward.

The term avoids the ambiguity that can arise from using "left" and "right", because those directions change depending on the observer's position.

Starboard

Starboard is the right-hand side of a vessel when facing forward.

Bridge

The bridge is the principal location from which a vessel is navigated and commanded.

On many ships, it provides a commanding view over the vessel and surrounding waters.

Deck

A deck is a horizontal structural level or surface within or on a vessel.

Different ships contain different arrangements of working, accommodation, cargo and machinery spaces.

Keel

The keel is a major longitudinal structural component running along the bottom of a vessel.

In traditional ship construction it forms a fundamental part of the vessel's structural framework.

Superstructure

The superstructure consists broadly of structures constructed above the main hull or upper deck.

Accommodation blocks, navigation bridges and operational spaces may form part of a ship's superstructure.

5. Common Vessel Types

Container Ship

A container ship is designed primarily to transport standardised intermodal freight containers.

Its characteristic rows of container stacks make it one of the most recognisable commercial vessel types.

Bulk Carrier

A bulk carrier transports unpackaged bulk commodities such as grain, coal, ore or similar cargoes.

Large cargo holds and prominent hatch covers are characteristic features.

Tanker

A tanker is designed to transport liquid cargoes.

The category includes several specialised forms, including oil tankers, chemical tankers and product tankers.

Ro-Ro — Roll-on/Roll-off

Ro-Ro vessels are designed so that wheeled cargo can be driven or rolled on and off the vessel.

Ferries and vehicle carriers are common examples.

Passenger Ship

Passenger ships are designed primarily to carry people. The category includes ferries, cruise ships and other specialised passenger vessels.

Tug

A tug is a powerful manoeuvring vessel designed primarily to assist other vessels, particularly during harbour movements, berthing, unberthing and other operations.

Tugs are especially interesting subjects for maritime photographers because their relatively small dimensions can be contrasted with the large ships they assist.

Trawler

A trawler is a fishing vessel designed to catch fish using trawling gear.

The term describes a vessel by its fishing method rather than simply by its size.

Research Vessel

A research vessel is designed or equipped to support scientific investigation at sea.

Depending on its mission, it may carry laboratories, sampling equipment, survey systems or specialised observation equipment.

Offshore Support Vessel

An offshore support vessel provides logistical, operational or specialised support to offshore activities.

The category encompasses several different vessel designs and missions.

6. Maritime Organisations and Regulations

IMO — International Maritime Organization

The International Maritime Organization is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for developing the international regulatory framework for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.

The organisation is not the same thing as the IMO number assigned to vessels, although the two are closely associated in maritime terminology.

SOLAS — International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea

SOLAS is one of the principal international maritime safety conventions.

It establishes minimum safety standards for the construction, equipment and operation of ships.

MARPOL — International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships

MARPOL is the principal international convention addressing pollution from ships.

It covers different forms of ship-source pollution, including oil, harmful substances, sewage, garbage and air pollution.

STCW — Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping

STCW establishes international standards concerning the training, certification and watchkeeping of seafarers.

ISPS Code — International Ship and Port Facility Security Code

The ISPS Code establishes an international framework for maritime and port security.

For photographers, it is worth remembering that photographing a vessel does not automatically confer access to restricted port areas or security-controlled facilities.

7. Terms That Are Often Confused

IMO Number vs MMSI

These are both vessel identifiers, but they serve different purposes.

IMO number: a permanent vessel identification number.

MMSI: a maritime communications identity used in systems such as AIS.

GT vs DWT

These are particularly easy to confuse.

GT: a measure based on enclosed volume.

DWT: a measure of the weight a vessel can carry, within its permitted loading condition.

Neither should simply be described as the ship's "weight".

Port vs Port of Registry

Port can describe the left-hand side of a vessel.

Port of Registry refers to the port recorded in the vessel's registration.

The same word therefore has two completely different maritime meanings.

Heading vs COG

Heading is where the vessel is pointing.

COG is the direction in which it is actually moving over the ground.

The two can differ.

SOG vs Speed Through Water

SOG measures movement relative to the ground.

Speed through water measures movement relative to the surrounding water.

Currents can produce a difference between the two.

8. Using Maritime Terms in Photographic Observation

For a maritime photographer, terminology becomes most useful when it is connected directly to observation.

A photograph may initially show only a ship passing Table Bay. Once the vessel is identified, however, the image can become a much richer record.

The photographer can establish the vessel's name, IMO number, vessel type, dimensions, flag, destination, course and speed. The physical characteristics visible in the photograph can then be compared with published vessel information.

This creates a useful observational sequence:

Observe → Photograph → Identify → Verify → Interpret → Record

The photograph provides visual evidence. Vessel databases and AIS can provide additional identification and operational information. Maritime terminology provides the conceptual vocabulary needed to understand that information.

This is particularly valuable in ship spotting because vessels change names, ownership, operators, flags and sometimes roles. The IMO number provides a stable reference through many of these changes.

For the photographer, therefore, maritime knowledge does not replace the photograph. It extends what the photograph can tell us.

Conclusion

Maritime terminology can initially appear inaccessible because of its specialised vocabulary and extensive use of abbreviations. Once the principal terms are understood, however, vessel information becomes considerably easier to interpret.

For photographers and shipspotters, a relatively small vocabulary goes a long way.

Knowing the difference between IMO and MMSI, GT and DWT, heading and COG, or port and starboard can transform a vessel photograph from a visual record into a documented observation.

This is one of the attractions of maritime photography: the camera records the visible ship, while maritime research reveals the story behind it.
