CORAL SEA (IMO 7366506)

The CORAL SEA (IMO 7366506) is an unusual and historically significant vessel in the maritime story of southern Africa. Built in 1974 at Levingston Shipbuilding in Orange, Texas, she entered service as GLOMAR CORAL SEA, a Global Marine offshore drilling vessel. Her later transformation into a South African marine diamond vessel placed her within one of the world's most technically distinctive offshore mining operations.

Measuring approximately 126 metres in overall length and 20 metres in beam, CORAL SEA is a substantial vessel by any conventional measure. Her present maritime identity, however, tells only part of her story. The vessel's importance lies in the technological transition from offshore petroleum exploration to deep-water mineral exploration and recovery.

From Oil Exploration to Diamond Mining

In 1989, the former GLOMAR CORAL SEA was acquired by De Beers Marine and converted in Cape Town. The conversion was part of an ambitious attempt to adapt offshore drilling technology to the recovery of diamonds from the seabed off Namibia. The resulting vessel sailed as CORAL SEA in February 1991 and commenced mining operations in April that year.

The concept was technically innovative. A large-diameter drill (LDD) system used a substantial drill bit connected to a reverse-circulation riser passing through the vessel's moon pool. Diamond-bearing seabed material could therefore be brought aboard for processing. The technology combined principles from offshore oil drilling with marine mineral extraction.

The early results were sufficiently successful to influence the subsequent development of De Beers' offshore mining fleet. Deep-water diamond recovery increased substantially in 1991, and the sister vessel GRAND BANKS was subsequently acquired and converted for the same broad technological approach.

A Vessel That Changed Roles

CORAL SEA's career did not remain confined to production mining. As De Beers Marine expanded its fleet and developed larger and more productive vessels, CORAL SEA was withdrawn from mining production in the late 1990s and converted into a dual-purpose sampling and mining vessel.

This change is particularly important from a maritime-studies perspective. Sampling is fundamental to offshore mining because the seabed resource is spatially variable. Geological surveying, sampling and resource evaluation establish where economically significant deposits may exist and help determine how subsequent mining should proceed. De Beers' marine operations consequently developed a highly integrated relationship between geology, surveying, sampling, engineering and vessel operations.

Historical records show CORAL SEA undertaking extensive pre-production sampling in the Atlantic 1 licence area off Namibia. In 2008, for example, the vessel reportedly spent 266 days undertaking sampling and collected 5,586 samples.

The Namibian Connection

CORAL SEA therefore became closely associated with the offshore diamond fields of Namibia. The Atlantic 1 area represents a particularly important chapter in the development of marine diamond mining, where deposits occur beneath the seabed in increasingly deep water.

The vessel's career illustrates how maritime technology can be repurposed. A ship originally designed around the economics and engineering requirements of offshore petroleum exploration became part of an entirely different extractive industry. The hull, moon pool and offshore drilling heritage provided a technological platform upon which De Beers could develop a new form of seabed mining.

For Cape Town's maritime landscape, CORAL SEA has an additional significance. Her conversion took place in Cape Town, connecting the vessel directly with the city's long-established relationship with ship repair, marine engineering, offshore technology and the diamond industry.

Her presence in Cape Town is therefore more than a matter of port activity. CORAL SEA represents an intersection between South African maritime engineering, Namibian marine geology and the international offshore petroleum industry.

Current vessel records identify CORAL SEA as a South African-flagged vessel, with Cape Town as an important location in her recent operational history. AIS records have reported her moored in Cape Town, while other maritime databases now classify her as reserved or no longer in regular service.

A Maritime Time Capsule

There is something particularly compelling about photographing CORAL SEA today. At first glance she may appear to be simply another large industrial vessel in Cape Town's harbour. Her profile, however, represents more than five decades of changing maritime technology.

Built during the offshore-drilling era of the 1970s, converted in Cape Town during the development of deep-water marine diamond mining, and subsequently adapted for sampling and resource evaluation, CORAL SEA embodies a remarkable sequence of technological reinvention.

For maritime observation, she is consequently a time capsule of offshore engineering: a vessel whose working life reflects the transition from petroleum exploration to sophisticated seabed mineral exploration.

Her IMO number, 7366506, provides the fixed identity through these changing roles. The name CORAL SEA may look deceptively simple, but behind it lies the history of GLOMAR CORAL SEA, De Beers Marine, Cape Town ship conversion, Namibian offshore diamonds and the development of large-diameter seabed drilling.

That makes CORAL SEA considerably more than an old industrial vessel. She is a surviving physical link between several chapters of southern African maritime and technological history.
