ORIENT ADVENTURER — IMO 9664706
Photographed from the coast using the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM, the vessel was at an unusually productive working distance for this lens. The combination of distance, excellent daylight and relatively clear atmospheric conditions produced one of my strongest maritime images with the 800mm. More importantly, the photograph provides an unusually detailed visual record of a sophisticated offshore engineering vessel.

ORIENT ADVENTURER is a 130-metre-long, 25-metre-wide subsea construction vessel designed by Ulstein and originally delivered in 2014 as POLAR ONYX. Its IMO number, 9664706, remains its permanent maritime identifier despite subsequent changes of name and ownership. Ulstein identifies the vessel as an SX121 design and records its original construction at Ulstein Verft in Norway. (Ulstein Group)
The vessel subsequently became ONYX before being renamed ORIENT ADVENTURER following its acquisition by Dong Fang Offshore. Its present configuration represents a significant evolution from the vessel's original role.
From Subsea Vessel to Cable-Laying Platform
ORIENT ADVENTURER is particularly interesting because her working capability has developed considerably since her original construction.
Ulstein records that the vessel was converted in 2025 for cable-laying operations and other subsea activities associated with offshore wind. The conversion included engineering work associated with relocating the existing Huisman Vertical Lay System and integrating a 3,000-tonne cable carousel. (Ulstein Group)
Dong Fang Offshore describes ORIENT ADVENTURER as a high-specification cable installation vessel, with a 1,700-square-metre deck, a DP3 dynamic positioning system, and a 250-tonne active heave-compensated crane. The company states that the vessel can carry more than 5,000 tonnes of cable and lay more than 100 kilometres of cable. (DFO)
These capabilities provide important context when looking at the photograph.
What initially appears to be a large offshore support vessel is actually a highly specialised offshore engineering platform designed to undertake complex subsea operations.

Reading the Vessel Through the Photograph
This is where maritime photography becomes particularly valuable to the MOS process.
The first stage is OBSERVE.
From the coast, the vessel immediately presented a distinctive visual signature. The large yellow offshore handling equipment dominates the centre of the vessel, while the substantial superstructure occupies the forward section. The deck arrangement, cranes and specialist equipment distinguish ORIENT ADVENTURER from a conventional cargo vessel or ordinary supply ship.
The second stage is PHOTOGRAPH.
The RF 800mm proved exceptionally well suited to this particular observation. At the vessel's distance, the long focal length compressed the offshore scene sufficiently to make the ship a substantial photographic subject while still retaining its complete profile.
This is an important practical example of why I do not regard 800mm as inherently too long for maritime photography.
It can be.
But distance changes everything.
Here, the vessel was almost perfectly positioned for the lens. The strong daylight also suited the RF 800mm's fixed f/11 aperture. The resulting image retains considerable detail across the vessel, including its superstructure, deck machinery, crane systems, markings and hull configuration.
The photograph therefore functions simultaneously as a maritime image and an observational document.

Identifying ORIENT ADVENTURER
The third MOS stage is IDENTIFY.
The IMO number is particularly important here. Vessel names can change; the IMO number provides a permanent identity reference for the ship.
In this case, IMO 9664706 connects the present ORIENT ADVENTURER with her earlier identities as POLAR ONYX and ONYX. Vessel-tracking information records the present vessel under the Marshall Islands flag, with MMSI 538009865 and callsign V7A5268. (VesselFinder)
The vessel's dimensions are generally given as approximately 130 metres in length and 25–26 metres in beam, depending on the database and measurement convention. The original Ulstein specification gives 130 metres by 25 metres, while current tracking sources commonly list approximately 123–130 metres and 25–26 metres. For this MOS record, the builder's 130 × 25 metre specification provides the clearest technical reference. (Ulstein Group)
Investigating the Working Platform
The fourth stage is INVESTIGATE.
The more one learns about ORIENT ADVENTURER, the more interesting the photograph becomes.
DeepOcean describes the vessel as a state-of-the-art Subsea Construction Vessel, equipped for subsea construction, SURF operations, inspection, maintenance and repair, subsea lifting and related activities. Its equipment includes a 275-tonne Huisman Vertical Lay System, a 250-tonne active heave-compensated NOV crane, a secondary 12-tonne knuckle-boom crane, a 1,700-square-metre working deck and two work-class remotely operated vehicles. The vessel's DP3 capability is also significant. Dynamic positioning allows a vessel of this type to maintain its position with considerable precision while undertaking complex offshore operations, where accurate positioning can be essential to subsea installation and construction work.
The photograph therefore captures considerably more than the external appearance of a ship.
It captures the visible architecture of an offshore engineering system.
A Vessel Connected to the Offshore Energy Transition
ORIENT ADVENTURER also illustrates the increasingly diverse roles played by specialist vessels in offshore energy.
In January 2025, DeepOcean announced a charter agreement with Dong Fang Offshore under which the vessel would join DeepOcean's fleet from early 2026 through the end of 2027, with options for up to four additional years. DeepOcean stated that the vessel would support offshore wind operations and maintenance, installation, inspection, maintenance and repair, construction and related activities across offshore renewable and conventional energy sectors. That makes the vessel particularly relevant to contemporary maritime observation.
From the shore, the photographer sees only a moving vessel.
Through investigation, the vessel becomes part of a much larger story involving subsea infrastructure, offshore construction, cable installation and renewable-energy development.
Documenting the Vessel
The fifth MOS stage is DOCUMENT.
My photograph records ORIENT ADVENTURER as observed offshore from the Cape Town coastline. The image preserves the vessel's profile under favourable atmospheric and lighting conditions and provides a visual reference for its distinctive configuration.
This is precisely where the RF 800mm becomes particularly useful.
The lens has allowed me to photograph a vessel that would otherwise occupy a much smaller proportion of the frame. The resulting image reveals enough of the ship's architecture to support subsequent research while maintaining the visual integrity of the offshore scene.
For me, this is one of the most compelling applications of the RF 800mm f/11 in maritime photography.
It is not merely a matter of "reaching" a distant vessel.
It is about recording enough information for the photograph to become an observational resource.
Archiving an Offshore Encounter
The sixth stage is ARCHIVE.
ORIENT ADVENTURER now becomes part of my growing maritime photographic archive, alongside the increasing number of vessels observed from the Cape Town coastline.
The image provides a time-specific visual record of the vessel under its current name and configuration. Combined with the IMO number and subsequent research, it becomes possible to connect the photograph with the vessel's operational history.
This is an important distinction between casual shipspotting and systematic maritime observation.
A single photograph can be transient.
An identified and documented photograph becomes part of a continuing record.
Interpreting What We See
The final MOS stage is INTERPRET.
ORIENT ADVENTURER is an excellent example of why maritime photography can become a form of visual research.
At first glance, the photograph is simply a striking image of a red-and-white offshore vessel against the blue Atlantic.
Closer examination reveals something considerably more complex.
The vessel's distinctive equipment points towards specialised subsea operations. Its history connects Norway, Taiwan and international offshore engineering. Its conversion reflects changing requirements in the offshore energy sector. Its current DeepOcean charter places it within an international operational network extending beyond the immediate waters in which it was photographed. (Ulstein Group)
And all of that information began with an observation from the coastline.
ORIENT ADVENTURER and the RF 800mm
For my own photography, there is another lesson contained within this particular encounter.
I have previously noted that the RF 800mm f/11 can be too restrictive for many vessels. That remains true. A vessel passing relatively close to the observation point may simply be too large for the field of view.
ORIENT ADVENTURER demonstrates the opposite situation.
This was an 800mm vessel.
The distance was right. The light was right. The atmosphere was sufficiently clear. The vessel's profile was well suited to the narrow field of view, and the resulting image contains both environmental context and substantial technical detail.
The photograph is therefore valuable to me on two levels.
It is a strong maritime photograph in its own right.
But within the MOS framework, it is also the beginning of a documented investigation into a sophisticated offshore engineering vessel.
OBSERVE → PHOTOGRAPH → IDENTIFY → INVESTIGATE → DOCUMENT → ARCHIVE → INTERPRET.
ORIENT ADVENTURER provides another excellent example of how that sequence can transform a distant vessel sighting into a meaningful maritime photographic record.
And, on this particular occasion, the RF 800mm f/11 was exactly the right instrument for the observation.
