Canon PowerShot SX50 HS in Action

While waiting for one of my clients for a Canon Birds in Flight photography training session at Intaka Island yesterday, I took out my 2012 Canon PowerShot SX50 HS for a few images around the island.

With good light and some patience the camera delivers satisfactory RAW (CR2) processable images in Adobe Lightroom. The RAW files also get's the enhanced noise clean-up assistance from Lightroom Version 15's Denoise function.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Personal Best Features
Apart from the impressive 50x optical zoom lens (24-1200mm equivalent) the standout feature for me is the CR2 RAW file editing option in Lightroom (only when using the creative/ advanced modes: AV / TV / Manual Mode).

I am also impressed with the HS Image Stabilisation at long focal lengths and the noise management when using Auto-ISO. For a 2012 12MP PowerShot Super-Zoom image quality should get a mention as well.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Relevance 2026

The older Canon PowerShot SX50 HS is effective in good light. The Image Stabilisation at 50x zoom works remarkedly well for such a small sensor camera attached to a '1200 mm' lens.

Note: The SX50 HS is not a DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses. The 50X zoom lens is the only lens permanently attached to the camera. The latest PowerShot SX HS model is the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS - be aware that the SX70 HS does not have an external hotshoe for Canon Speedlite flashes.

Birding Photography Training Intaka Island

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Suitability for Intaka Island

The Canon PowerShot SX50 HS is a good fit for Intaka Island's diverse habitats and numerous bird species, offering an excellent lightweight alternative to bulkier DSLR setups.
  • Exceptional Zoom Range: Its 50x optical zoom lens, equivalent to a 24-1200mm focal length, is ideal for reaching distant subjects common in birdwatching. This reach is crucial for capturing birds from the hides at Intaka Island.
  • Image Stabilisation (IS): The effective built-in Image Stabilizer helps in achieving sharp shots, even when shooting handheld at long focal lengths.
  • RAW File Support: The ability to shoot in RAW (CR2) format allows for greater flexibility and enhanced noise reduction during post-processing in software like Adobe Lightroom.
  • Performance in Good Light: The camera performs best in good lighting conditions, such as early morning or late afternoon light, which are ideal times for bird activity at Intaka Island.
  • User Opinions: Many birders praise the camera for "record shots" (documentary proof of sightings) and find it an excellent, cost-effective tool for general bird photography, though some note image quality can be challenging for large prints.

Recommended Settings & Tips (Canon PowerShot SX50 HS)

Optimising your camera settings and technique can significantly improve your results at Intaka Island.
  • Use a Tripod or Monopod: Given the long telephoto reach, using a tripod or monopod is highly recommended to minimise camera shake and ensure sharper images, especially in lower light.
  • Shoot in Av or Tv Mode: Using Aperture priority (Av) or Shutter priority (Tv) mode gives you more control over exposure settings. For capturing moving birds, use a fast shutter speed (e.g., 1/1000s or faster) to freeze motion.
  • Manage ISO: Keep the ISO as low as possible (ideally under ISO 400) to reduce image noise.
  • Focusing: Experiment with the different autofocus modes. AI Servo (continuous focus) mode can be useful for tracking birds in flight.
  • Patience is Key: Intaka Island has multiple bird hides. Be patient and wait for the birds to come to you for the best photographic opportunities.
