Photography Student Excitement

Image
Understanding Aperture, Depth of Field and Light Using A 'Long Lens' for Flower Photography “Nothing excites me more than witnessing my photography students gaining the understanding of i.e. the advantages and challenges of aperture, depth of field and / or light. A complete new creative world opens up to them – irrespective of camera, lens, distance (and / or subject). For me its not about the quality of their images at first, but the focus and purpose of gaining an understanding of the fundamentals of photography.   The Garden is a wonderful ‘classroom’ – full of various challenges / and meeting many photographic learning objectives. It’s wonderful to see their own excitement in the process of mastering their 'new' art.” – Vernon Chalmers With Canon EOS 7D Mark II / EF 400mm f/4.5L IS USM lens Flower Image: © Vernon Chalmers Photography Copyright Introduction to the Photography Exposure Triangle Canon Long Exposure | Night Photography Setup & Tips Canon Photograph...

Gentleman on a Bicycle... Flower for Thought

Image
A reflective street photography moment featuring a gentleman on a bicycle and a flower for thought, exploring observation, symbolism and visual storytelling. Returning from my early morning hike on Thursday a man on a bicycle approach me, stopped next to me and introduced himself. His first words even before the formal introduction were “It must be tough when there are no birds around the river’. He had a point, but I’ve captured the birds (and a few flowers) earlier in the morning and was returning from the Table Bay Nature Reserve after stalking the black-crowned night heron. Anyway, we started talking and although he was not particularly interested in photography he had a thought-provoking philosophy about nature’s significant role in our daily lives. I found the 45-minutes or so conversation about this man’s fundamental beliefs and his interpretation of the role of nature quite fascinating. While processing this wildflower image this morning I realised our discussion was perhaps r...

Milnerton Flea Market on a Sunny Saturday

Image
Milnerton Flea Market on a Saturday Afternoon With Canon 6D and EF 24-70mm f/4L USM Lens Milnerton Flea Market - Vintage Cameras and Accessories Saturday at the Milnerton market... A hotchpotch of colours, textures, goods and just about everything at the Milnerton Flea Market. This Flea Market is not just about 'one man's junk is another man's treasure', there are various traders selling handmade African craft works, secondhand books, textile and various stalls of fresh produce and refreshments. I have found a table with all the old film cameras and accessories particularly interesting and will definitely return for another look. The Milnerton Flea Market seems to be well organised with clear trading policies and communication between the traders and the Flea Market site management. I've spent some time discussing various bits of trading and other information and received very positive feedback on well organised trading environment and conditions. Image Gallery 14 ...

Bird Watching Table Bay Nature Reserve

Image
Bird watching at Table Bay Nature Reserve near Woodbridge Island offers diverse wetland birdlife, scenic lagoon habitats, and rewarding photography opportunities throughout the year. Helmeted Guineafowl - Table Bay Nature Reserve On yet a glorious and crisp morning I went on my routine short walkabout around the Table Bay Nature Reserve Diep River, Woodbridge Island. Normally, I'm out looking out for birds in flight, but on this particular mid-morning most birds were settled in their feeding and 'doing-nothing' routine. I was very pleased to see a few helmeted guineafowl jogging along, at times, precariously close to Otto du Plessis Drive (on-route to the reserve). Making my way through the Reserve, and highlight of my morning, was a close encounter with a nesting / perched pair of pied kingfishers. I was fortunate enough to capture at least one of them. Towards the end of the gallery below are two birds in flight images captured of a Cape teal duck, Egyptian goose and D...
