What the IBIS Changes

What IBIS actually does

A useful way of thinking about the specification is as an indication of the potential range of camera-shake compensation.
For example, conceptually:
1/125s → 1/60s → 1/30s → 1/15s → 1/8s
represents successive reductions in shutter speed.
Under suitable conditions, stabilisation can make these slower shutter speeds increasingly viable for a static subject.
But the actual result depends on the photographer, focal length, subject, technique, environmental conditions and the particular lens being used.
Consequently, IBIS should not be regarded as a licence simply to select extremely slow shutter speeds.
It is better understood as additional handheld margin.
Where will IBIS be particularly useful?

Landscape photography
Landscape photography is an obvious application.
A photographer may encounter a scene where the available light is falling but a tripod is inconvenient, unnecessary or prohibited.

Travel photography

A tripod is rarely the first choice.

Buildings do not normally move.
Consequently, if the photographer can control camera movement, there is considerable scope to use slower shutter speeds.

- interiors;
- churches;
- museums;
- heritage buildings;
- architectural details;
- urban structures;
- and evening architecture.
In these situations, the photographer may be able to maintain a lower ISO without immediately resorting to a tripod.
Street photography
Street photography introduces a more complicated relationship.
People move, but not every element of a street scene is moving rapidly.
IBIS can therefore be useful when the photographer is deliberately working at relatively slow shutter speeds to capture atmosphere while still wanting to maintain handheld flexibility.
The important point is that the photographer has to decide what should remain sharp and what can move.
IBIS does not remove that creative decision.

Close-up and detail photography
IBIS also has relevance for close-up work.

IBIS and the photographer's shutter-speed decisions

open the aperture

What IBIS does not change
This is arguably the most important section for photographers learning how to use the system.
IBIS does not remove the need to understand shutter speed.
It does not freeze subject movement.
It does not eliminate the need for good handholding technique.
It does not make every lens equally effective in every situation.
And it does not mean that a tripod has become obsolete.
For a static subject, IBIS can potentially provide a major advantage.
For a rapidly moving subject, shutter speed may remain the dominant consideration.
This distinction becomes particularly obvious in Birds in Flight photography.
A photographer photographing a bird against the sky may be able to obtain excellent camera stability through IBIS, but if the shutter speed is too slow to freeze the bird's wings, the resulting image can still contain substantial subject-motion blur.
For BIF, therefore, a high shutter speed such as 1/2500s or 1/3200s can remain far more important to image sharpness than the camera's maximum IBIS rating.
That is a useful reminder that stabilisation and shutter speed solve different photographic problems.
My R6 Mark III experience provides an interesting reference point
This is where my own experience with Canon's EOS R6 Mark III becomes relevant to my thinking about the EOS R8 Mark II.
I have been using the R6 Mark III in actual field photography rather than considering IBIS purely as a specification.
That experience has encouraged me to think about stabilisation less as a headline feature and more as part of the overall photographic system.

But the important point for this R8 Mark II discussion is not that the R6 Mark III has a higher number.
It is that using IBIS repeatedly in the field changes one's awareness of camera movement, shutter speed and the relationship between stabilisation and subject movement.

The question becomes less:
"Does this camera have IBIS?"
and more:
"Where can I actually exploit it?"
That is the more useful question for a photographer.
IBIS as an expansion of photographic freedom
There is a broader way of looking at the R8 Mark II's stabilisation.
The original EOS R8 could already produce high-quality full-frame photographs.
The addition of IBIS does not fundamentally change the sensor's resolution.
Instead, it potentially changes the circumstances in which that sensor can be used effectively handheld.
That is a subtle but important distinction.
The photographer can potentially work later into the evening.
They can enter environments where tripods are inconvenient.
They can use slower shutter speeds with static subjects.
They can exploit non-IS lenses differently.
They can carry a compact full-frame camera while retaining body-based stabilisation.
And they gain another tool for balancing shutter speed, aperture and ISO.
In that sense, IBIS is less about making the camera better than about expanding the photographer's available choices.
The real significance of IBIS on the EOS R8 Mark II
For an existing EOS R8 owner, IBIS is perhaps the most obvious reason to look closely at what the Mark II changes.
For a photographer considering their first full-frame Canon, it becomes part of the camera's practical proposition.
And for an experienced photographer, the important question is how to integrate stabilisation into an existing understanding of exposure and photographic technique.
The EOS R8 Mark II's IBIS should therefore not be reduced to Canon's 7.5-stop headline.
