During her arrival in the Port of Cape Town on 31 July 2026, she carried a deck cargo of wind turbine blades, illustrating the increasingly important role of maritime transport in supporting the global transition towards renewable energy.

A Winter Arrival in Table Bay

Photographed from Milnerton, PATRICIA entered Cape Town under typical winter conditions characterised by heavy atmospheric haze over Table Bay. Although the visibility reduced overall contrast, the distinctive silhouette of the vessel immediately attracted attention. The enormous wind turbine blades secured on deck, together with the vessel's twin heavy-lift cranes, made her one of the most visually striking ships observed from the northern coastline.

Further verification using multiple maritime databases together with confirmation of the vessel's IMO number (9978509) established beyond doubt that the ship was indeed PATRICIA. The experience illustrates an important principle of maritime observation: while AIS is an invaluable identification tool, newly commissioned vessels may not appear consistently across all tracking services immediately after entering service.

Careful visual observation—including company markings, cargo characteristics, crane configuration and voyage context—remains an important component of accurate vessel identification.

Photographic Considerations

The photograph presented several technical challenges.

The considerable distance between the observation point at Milnerton and the vessel required the use of a long telephoto lens, while heavy winter haze reduced local contrast across the bay. Nevertheless, stable atmospheric conditions allowed sufficient detail to be retained in both the vessel and her remarkable cargo.
