Advanced Canon Autofocus Systems - keep it simple...

When it comes to camera Autofocus (AF) configuration(s) and tuning I try and keep settings at their default for as long as possible (will only change the size of the active AF-area).

The image of the the Egyptian goose was only the fourth image that came out of my Canon EOS 7D Mark II soon after its launch about 5 years ago. The week or so before this I tested the same body from Canon South Africa and used the default AF settings - and was more than satisfied with the results.

Setting / EXIF Data of Egyptian Goose Image

Canon EOS 7D Mark II : AI Servo Autofocus / FPS Test
Canon EOS 7D Mark II : AI Servo Autofocus / FPS Test
On the day I received my own body I took it out the box, paired it with my 400mm lens and walked down to the Diep River (Woodbridge Island) and up to today use the same AF settings. I have worked through the numerous configurations of many modern (Canon) AF systems, but have found the default is good to go in most cases.

When I work with new and experienced (Canon) photographers I ask them to return the AF configuration to the default and we shoot for long periods of time just on this (only changing the AF-Points / Zones if required). This extended frame of reference it will assist the photographer to understand future tweaking (if / when required).

Purple Heron in Flight - Woodbridge Island, Cape Town

I captured this shy purple heron taking-off in the Table Bay Nature Reserve close to Woodbridge Island, Cape Town during a recent mid-morning hike (opposite the Milnerton Golf Course with Table Mountain as backdrop in all images).

We only spot these shy birds on occasion and unlike the name 'purple heron' I find them more brown in colour. The backdrop for these four consecutive image is Table Mountain - which is about 8 to 10 kilometers from the Table Bay Nature Reserve.

All photos by Vernon Chalmers with Canon EOS 7D Mark II / Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens.

Testing the Canon 500D 77mm Close-Up Lens Filter

Close-Up Photography: Testing the Canon 500D 77mm Close-Up Lens Filter
In an effort to reduce the minimum focus distance (MFD) of my 400mm lens (3.5 meter) I ordered a Canon 500D 77mm close-up lens filter. This is mainly to eliminate the carrying of a second body with macro lens when out in the field with the long lens (for Birds in Flight). The 400mm works well for close-up work from a distance, but I wanted a closer focusing option (with more magnification).

Canon 500D 77mm Close-Up Lens Filter Challenges

With the close-up lens filter the MFD is now an effective 40 - 50mm (compared to 3.5 meter) - which brings some challenges (specific to the 400mm non-IS lens):

  • Super-thin depth of field (require smaller apertures to counter this)
  • Best useful f/stops are now f/22 - f/32
  • Requires good light or flash
  • With no IS extra stability is required (tripod) / or faster shutter speed

What I like so far:

  • Autofocus works well in good light
  • Manual focus with flash works well on tripod
  • Satisfied with the extreme close-up image quality
  • Quality of the bokeh (blurred out of focus areas)

This specific combination (crop with 400mm lens) should work beter on a full frame body (as it is minus the 1.6 crop factor) with a 70-300mm lens (as recommended by Canon). There is no point in using the Canon 500D close-up lens filter on the EOS 6D / 400mm lens as I want to be able to use it in the field (Canon EOS 7D Mark II) without removing any lenses. But, I will test it later with my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens on APS-C (EOS 70D) and Full Frame (Canon EOS 6D).

First three images: Handheld, outside in good light and AF with manual exposure settings as I would capture Birds in Flight - ISO during the outside light testing was limited to ISO 1600.

Last image: On tripod with Speedlite 430 EX II (bounced) flash: ISO 400 (Av Mode).

All images are uncropped and processed in Lightroom 6 with some exposure, contrast and a few other adjustments.

Body / Lens used: Canon EOS 7D Mark II / EF 400mm f/5.5L USM Lens f/32 / ISO 400 - 1600 1/250 - 1/5000s.

Birds in Flight Photography Skills Development

Peregrine Falcon in Flight - Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Peregrine Falcon in Flight - Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Regular Birds in Flight Photography sessions at Woodbridge Island, Cape Town is without doubt the photography genre I enjoy  the most.

Not just the photographing of the more than 55 species on / around the Island, but also the research, development, and presentation of Birds in Flight Photography Private Training / Workshops around Cape Town.

I find the advances in modern Canon EOS DSLR phase-detect AF-systems fascinating and spend many hours with my Canon cameras experimenting / looking for ways for extracting the maximum value from various Canon APS-C / Full Frame bodies and telephoto lenses.

Photographing Birds in Flight
Photographing Birds in Flight is a challenging genre, but the modern Canon AF System, tracking ability and excellent range of Canon EF telephoto lenses provides for a very good DSLR camera / lens combination for photographing Birds in Flight.

Birds in Flight Photography Skills Development / How to Photograph Birds in Flight
I've had some great results over the years with various Canon EOS DSLR bodies (both personal and professional) and with Birds in Flight Photography Training during skills development sessions at Woodbridge Island, Cape Town. I have personally worked with / or trained delegates with the following Canon EOS bodies:
  • Canon EOS 700D / EOS 750D / EOS 800D
  • Canon EOS 60D / EOS 70D / EOS 77D
  • Canon EOS 80D /  EOS 90D
  • Canon EOS 7D / EOS 7D Mark II
  • Canon EOS 6D / EOS 6D Mark II
  • Canon EOS R / EOS RP (Mirrorless)

Canon EOS 7D Mark II / Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens
Canon EOS 7D Mark II - Woodbridge Island Cape Town
Canon EOS 7D Mark II / Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens
I predominantly capture Birds in Flight with this combination mainly for the following reasons:

Canon EOS 7D Mark II

  • Advanced AF system with multi-controller support
  • Wide Zone AF option for erratic and small birds
  • 10 fps continuous shooting and deeper buffer
  • Slightly better ISO noise improvement
  • Dual memory card slots

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens

  • Reach: 400mm x 1.6 on APS-C bodies
  • Exceptional image quality
  • Fix focal length / f/5.6 aperture
  • Built-in lens hood
  • Fast Autofocus
  • Light weight

Canon EOS 70D - Woodbridge Island Cape Town
Canon EOS 70D / Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens
Before I acquired the Canon EOS 7D Mark II I had no issues shooting birds in flight with the Canon EOS 70D and the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens combination.

Currently I use the Canon EOS 70D [aired with the super-sharp Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens for closer birds.

Canon EOS 70D
  • Responsive AF system
  • Zone AF option for erratic and small birds
  • 7 fps continuous shooting

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens

  • Reach: 300 x 1.6 on APS-C bodies
  • Exceptional image quality
  • Variable focal focal length
  • Fast Autofocus
  • Compact

Canon EOS 6D  - Woodbridge Island Cape Town
Canon EOS 6D / Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens
I do not use this Canon combination very often, but in my opinion the Canon EOS 6D works quite well for birds in flight (with center-AF Point selection). Many photographers don't even try as there are a few misconceptions that the 11-Point Autofocus system is not 'accurate enough' for tracking and capturing fast flying birds.

Canon EOS 6D
  • Full Frame Sensor
  • Sensitive center-point AF Point
  • 4.5 fps continuous shooting and deep buffer
  • Excellent low light shooting / ISO Management

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens

  • Reach: 300 x 1.6 on APS-C bodies
  • Exceptional image quality
  • Variable focal focal length
  • Fast Autofocus
